Default RMS Leak Again.

Pulled the car out of the garage and a saw a spot of oil on the floor. Not cool, but it lasted almost 4.5 years without a leak. The last RMS replacement was in 2010 and it looks like it needs to be done again, or not?

Sharkwerks says no as it won't leak while driving, only when parked. It looks like it's been leaking for a few weeks as, I try to get the car out a few times a month to circulate fluids through the crest and there is more than one drop spot. I just got back from vacation and it's been sitting for a wee bit.

Opinions on those with a leaking RMS and those who have fixed theirs.

1. Live the small leak?

2. Fix the small leak?

Wondering how much this will cost and if the motor comes out for this fix. If so, What else should be done? Coolant pipes? etc....

TIA

Not sure this is what you want to hear but Porsche replaced the rear main seal on my '07 GT3 four times and it kept leaking, well actually seeping, They ended up buying the car back form me. I understand the 996 turbo seal solves the issue. The only issue with a slight leak is that the owners manual has a big caution stating that any oil leak should be reported and the car not driven. That gives the lawyers an opening to void a warranty. Don't think that is and issue if yours is a 997.1 (2007-2008) For the record my '83 SC seats some oil from around the drain area and seeps some tranny fluid from the filler port in the tranny. I don't worry about either just enjoy the track car.

For what it is worth I have not had one drop of oil seeping from my 3.8 2011 GT3

leave it.

When these cars sit they will leak.... When they are used they are fine.

My car sits 6 months at a time... Sometimes it leaves a little pool on the floor... sometimes it dosnt

Just pissed from not being driven. Leave it. When you need something else done replace the seal. Unsure what seal bbi used on mine but the original and the one I had replaced during pipe weld has yet to leak. Knock on wood. If doing during clutch job or engine drop incremental cost is negligible.

Pulled the motor a few months ago to do coolant pipes and also check cause of oil leak from around flywheel area. Turned out it was NOT the RMS but the seal of the oil filter housing (goes way down to the front of the engine). Alex (Sharky) confirmed that these engines tend to weep from this area most of the time, but more so when driven hard vs. not at all...

There is a mating surface of the oil filter housing to the top of the block that's sealed with a silicone gasket, right by #7 in the attached pic. That's where my leak emanated from.

Either way, engine would need to come out to fix. Good time to do coolant pipes and upgrade to Sharky pipes (#2 in the pic).

When I got my 997.1 with 13k in 2013 it had a mild RMS leak. It now has 32k and hasn't even seeped at all since my first 2k mile road trip in the first month. I don't daily the car, so it does sometimes sit for a few weeks at a time over the winter, but the leak has not returned.

Drive the car more or live with the leak?

I snapped a few pics to try to see if it's actually the RMS. Last night it looked like there was a nice amount of oil on this rubber gasket. I'm unsure what this pipe is. I know, I need a manual.

The seal that would normally leak seems pretty dry and it kind of appears that the oil is travelling down from somewhere above. I can't be sure of this as oil can get slung while driving. Maybe it is the RMS and the oil is being pushed up the side of the case.

I'm going to clean off the oil in a few hours and watch the RMS point of exit for any oil. I'll keep folks posted. If it is the RMS, I'm leaving it for now and will deal with it when I get some other work done.

that pipe in the first pic is part of the water cooling system. Behind that rubber is coolant.

No oil on the floor but the straight part of that pipe had a nice amount of oil on it.

I cleaned the entire underside and will be watching it.

Oil glows under UV (ultraviolet) light. Fresh leaked oil glows more than old oil.
UV torches are cheap, try to get one in the 385nm band. Makes it much easier to pinpoint leaks.

Cheers,
Mike
