Question water in engine GT3 cup

after driving though heavy rain my engine in my GT3 996 Cup car started a banging noise. I cut ignition 5 seconds after hearing the noise. On opening the engine we found 63 ml of water inside the exhaust manifold and one connecting rod bent in cylinder no. 5. Is it possible to ingress so much water to cause this type of damage? How could this amount of water got into the engine. Is this a hydrolock issue? I thought these race cars could handle water?

Sure sounds like a hydrolock issue. Was there anything loose in the intake system when you removed the engine? These cars run in the rain for extended periods of time in endurance races without that type of issue.

Peter sorry to hear about your pains. Did you remove the drain plug from your intake when you drove in the rain? I believe the late 6 Cups all had that problem with the intake design--it's a big scoop straight into the throttle body and the onus is on the driver to remove that rubber plug in wet conditions
