k40 calibre radar detector - relocate >>
I bought my .1 with a k40 calibre already installed (front and rear radar + laser diffuser). The front radar has never really worked well so I decided to see what was going on. I pulled the bumper off and found that the front radar was zip tied face down towards the ground. Thanks installers!
I changed the wiring path a bit and located it centrally behind the plastic bumper.
I made a little aluminum bracket and metal screwed it to the impact beam so it has good line of sight and is away from the metallic surface.
There actually were instructions right on the unit explaining how to install and the correct orientation. Don't know how they missed that.
Here's a view of the bumper buttoned up and how much of the detector you can see.

Adding to this thread...
Something was rattling around behind my passenger tail light. While I was changing the oil, I pulled the rear bumper and the light. The installer who installed the K40 years ago (before I owned the car) took a shortcut and just placed the rear detector behind the light. No screws, no tape, nothing.
I moved the Detector behind the rear bumper and secured it with machine screws. I also rerouted the 12v power and the ground. You know, what the guy that does this for his job should have done in the first place.
Hopefully this will be the last of the outdated radar detector repair.
