No sound from the front springs. My wife started the car while I stood at the back to watch the cold start. Enough white smoke was produced to cloud up the garage and make it smell. The clatter also was noted briefly, does anyone know what makes the rattle sound?

It's the hydraulic lifters pressurizing and taking up any lash. Sounds a bit like a machine gun if you are listening closely.

My 997.1 GT3 smokes at start-up more so if she sits for say 3 weeks. If your car is CPO I would suggest not changing anything. I drive mine lots now that winter has passed, and so far (33k miles) the Rear Main Oil Seal is not leaking. Every 3k miles change oil (Mobile 1) and I am surprised how little it burns oil. My springs chatter and the tire pressure system monitor system is kaput. I gave up on rear Corsa tires as they don't last and now use TireRack on sale Z brands for rear sets around 350$ (pair).

It's a dry-sump with horizontally opposed cylinders, so usually letting the engine idle for 30-45 seconds prior to turning it off will keep it from smoking on start-up.

Totally and completely normal for the reasons stated above. I asked the exact same question on this forum about 1.5 years ago when I purchased my 2011 GT3. By the way .. congrats on purchasing the best 911 ever made, particularly if you are going to track the car. Extremely durable and reliable Mezger engine.

I did a search and only came up with cold start smoke on turbos, would have enjoyed reading your thread. I am glad the rattle and smoke on start up is normal. I live 8 hours from a track and I am located miles away from population centers so I do most of my recreational driving within a 50 mile radius. I also have a 08 scud, so its nice to drive a narrower car with three pedals.

Rattle on mine is the flaps in the exhaust sorting them selves out after vacuum has been lost to the valves over night.

Smoke is the elephant in the room with these cars, no rhyme nor reason... some times she does, sometimes she doesn't. Short or long standing, left ticking over before shut down or not. I now look to see if anyone is passing, if they are I wait otherwise they may get a lovely Porsche Cart that smells Bad!

I gather the sound you are hearing isn't constant

Is it a quick rattle that goes something like "Clack Clack Clack" or even a slightly more rapid cadence than you can say those words then it goes away all together?

But if its only on cold starts and never at any other time, less concerning

If it occurs more regularly then I would get the vario cams checked, mine was only on start for a couple of mornings and then it did it once on shutdown and the subsequent start, at which time I put it on a flatbed and sent to the workshop and sure enough the VC bolts were backing out - I had the honour of being the first in Oz with this problem

I was freaked when I got mine at first as were the neighbors when the smoke bellowed out... The joy of the Mezger, three years later and there is still smoke. As someone else posted, let it idle for 30-40 secs before shutting it down, does help somewhat. The grinding, although I don't know what it is, is brief and out. That is also disconcerting but stealership and others all agree that it is nothing to worry about.

Mine smokes every now and again.
The grinding occurred rarely and since I started using torco sr5 oil it hasn't done it at all. Was using Mobil one prior. Not starting an oil discussion!

A few months late but my 2010 GT3 with 11,000 mi. does the same thing. As did my RSA, 993, 73 S, and 94 3.6 turbo. My 2011 GTS never smoked. What I wouldn't give to have the 73 S and 94 3.6 turbo back in the garage.

It's all normal. Letting the car idle for about a minute does seem to help reduce smoke and sometimes rattle on the next cold start.

Yup, some oil just gets left in the cylinder and doesn't have the chance to drip down into sump since the cylinders are laying down. That's another reason why Boxster type motors last longer than a standard configuration inline or V type motor - because there is lubricant still in the cylinder at start-up to help. One of the reasons you see Subaru motors out there with 200k, 300k and beyond without a new or rebuilt motor. It's just generally Subarus don't smoke at start-up.
