Default Tie downs

Just picked up Featherlite 3110, 17'6" open trailer to tow my 997.2 GT3.

I have done extensive research here and I've decided to go with the Mac's Tiedowns with direct hook ratchets. Will be threading straps through the wheels.

From those of you who have the featherlite setup, should I order the 6 ft or 8 ft straps?

Buy the 8 footers IMHO
I had the open fl and I cannot recall which I bought but an extra 2 feet is better than short

I'm not a fan of strapping to the wheels although I know plenty of people do it that way. For my GT3, I use Renn Line tie downs and clip on ratchet straps (http://www.saferacer.com/g-force-2-ratchet-tie-down). You have to install the Renn Lines on the car, but it's just a few bolts and an easy job.

My alignment never changed despite years of trailering my car.

Going through the wheels allows the suspension to move if required. This is somewhat important especially if the car is sprung softly/stock. What can happen if the car is tied down tight above the suspension is that when a big bump is hit it can compress the suspension tighter than the tie-downs and may end up bending things upon rebound. If suspension is really firm that is less of an issue.

I've always made sure the tiedowns through the wheels were snug all the way around and if tires were hot I'd check them again as pressure dropped tiedowns would lose their snugness. I don't reef on them though. Transmission in neutral and parking brake on.

Bottom line is there are camps for/against each method. Choose what you feel comfortable with.

Thanks for the feedback. I've read multiple threads on this subject. The debate between rennline attachments versus through the wheels seems to be never ending. I will start by strapping through the wheels using macs tie downs with the padded fleece wheel straps. ANy problems and I will be sure to post follow-up.

I've always tied down through the wheels, never had an alignment change. Just simply get them snug, not stupid tight. Then re-snug them at your next gas stop. I use the exact same tie-downs. You'll be perfectly fine.

Body hooks are fine too, I just started using wheels to tie down initially and have never changed.

i have a featherlite 3110 and can tell you the standard 6' ratchets straps are a tad too long to use all around. you'll need a pair of these ratchets with the snap hook.

The Macs I posted above come with that standard.
