+1. if you listen to the vid during lockup, it sounds like the revs do a "two-step" down? i.e. sounds like it was stuck at least 1/2 throttle for a sec or 2. (either that or he REALLY messed up heel/toe!)

Wow. Hit at an angle and get airborne for 30 yards?

I didn't know that those concrete safety barriers can turn into Hot Wheels launch ramps.

Safety barrier FAIL, IMHO.

This video and picture have been all over the internet since the day it happened..

everyone now should no that keeping things public secret are long gone since the days of camera phones.... its a harsh reality we live in now whether we like it or not.

You're welcome

Clearly I was just stirring but it's pretty obvious to me that from the attitude around the first corner it was being over driven and if the throttle was stuck as suggested, you'd hope it be pushed into neutral to stop the drive... can't afford NOT to leave room for error with tarmac rallying.. the pro drivers I've worked with won't participate in tarmac rallys because they consider it far more dangerous than the track racing that is their bread and butter...

my 2 cents is that the driver assumed the barrier wall followed along side of the road of the course however there is a switch back there too. (not sure which turn was part of the stage?) Given the speed it was too late when he realized and did a full lock with no steering control available perhaps?

Had the course inserted directional arrows it would have made it easier for the driver.

I also assume the navigator was not able to keep up with his pace notes in such a tight quartered community thus was merely along for the ride on that particular stage.

Not uncommon for rally drivers to drive what they see in such a flat level area with short distances between turns in a community area.

Crash was amazing and if there was no water it surely would have been a worse impact on the roof.

Unfortunate, but that's curiously (not intending to be callous here) the second "Claimed WOT" racing incident I've heard in the past month. The other happened to a friend racing an Audi R8 LMS and I heard his first-hand account. These race cars--even the R8--all have clutch pedals. Wouldn't a driver instinctively de-clutch if he senses the throttle's stuck?

That said it's easy for me to analyze the situation from an armchair. Perhaps, in the heat of racing the realization of a stuck throttle doesn't come immediately...

Georg Plasa's accident was horrific (BMW 134 Judd V8) He never turned, never hit the brakes, hit the side of a mountain and died instantly from what it seems- no explanation as far as I know, maybe he had a medical condition-
That flat plane V8 sounds fantastic
There is footage of the actual crash which I won't post, but here is a clip showing him doing what he loved:

Oh, you can buy a Judd engine

http://www.engdev.com

$105K for a V10, 3.000km rebuild interval, lol
Not sure how much the V8 costs

The other V8 they make seems to be based on a BMW engine, and that one I would think is not a flat plane crankshaft since BMW V8's are not-

They do scream...I think they're having all the fun over in Europe
