Best gt3 for $100k?
I'm in the market for a sports car and dont want to spend more than $100k. I guess the main decision is whether to get a used 997.1 gt3 or gt3rs or a 997.2 gt3. I live in the mountains and rarely make it to the track although that is still a possibility. I'm thinking more for a weekend car, I tend to like raw cars without much tech. Cost of ownership mainly depreciation is also an issue as I would like to sell for something else in about 2 years probably. I happened to find a very nice 2007 gt3rs for the right price with the right options but I feel a little disapointed that it is very similar to a normal 997.1 gt3 and wonder if the newer 997.2 would be better for me. Thx for any input and I apologize if Im asking a similar question to past threads. Rob

Maybe you can learn from my experience. I am an analytical type, almost to a fault (my wife would say yes) . I was in exactly the same position - $100k budget, potential for DE/maybe track, but not the reason for purchase. I researched the hell out of this, talked to people, etc. Of course, opinions vary, but here is mine. Again, this is my conclusion, others will disagree.
- The jump from 997.1 to 997.2 is not insignificant...i.e. not a minor jump, so if you can afford to buy the latest generation, that is the right answer... several reasons why, but not without debate, etc.
- With $100k, you can find a nice example. If you are willing to spend $10k more you can buy the best available on the market (low miles, 1 owner, cpo cars, etc.). I decided to stretch.
- I lust for the RS. I came close to being irresponsible and buying one. Anywhere from $35-50k more. A lot more money. In this case, if no track time, I think its a waste. Would love the wide hips, would love the history of the badge, lower gearing, LWF, etc. But I think that the huge wing and decals are a bit much for street use, even weekend. The car just belongs on the track, and driving to/from it.
I think that the last mezger engine manual tranny GT3 is special...but there were many produced and so take your time to find a really great one. I bought mine from another Rennlister with about 4500 miles on it, and I am very happy with the purchase.

There are nice 997.2s on the market for <100k. Along with more power, comfort, technology, and handling, the .2s are some of the most beautiful GT3s when configured properly. No-brainer if you have 100k to spend.

well of course, these are all opinions, but for me it doesnt work out that way... i love the funky colors of the .1 rs, and to be honest if a green one had presented itself, i might not have been able to help myself... but for street use, i think the .1 rs is not as good a proposition as a .2 gt3...

i cannot remebmer if .1RS gearing is shorter than .1 non rs. even if it was, it's not particularly noticeable or useful.
.2RS gearing is way different than .2non rs. big difference.
but .2RS is not under 100k yet.
at your budget, serge's red car is cherry for the picking. i thnk serge is in need of money to buy more body building equipment for himself. it's priced below mkt.

I went through this about 6mo ago and opted for the .1RS as I found the stripped 0 option car I wanted as this has become the basis for a pretty raw canyon/occasional track car (just ripped out entire suspension and replaced with monoballs/ohlins, recaro seats, roll bar, harnesses, stereo delete, etc). Do not regret the decision at all. I plan to keep and drive the crap out of this car. RS will/have typically depreciate slower due to #'s produced. RS is a little more raw, both generations (LWFW rattle, less sound deadening, little louder, etc). Today if I had $100k to spend I'd still get the .1RS. In fact you can probably find one for mid-80s if you look a bit. More $ for mods!

overall .1RS
for street and everyday use and ease. the .2GT3 is softer and more compliant.
On the track, the 3.8 of the .2GT3 will be faster.
I had the same question and went with the .1RS
It was made in much lower numbers than the .2's and has a the best looking *** of any 911 IMO

I would do the .2 GT3
I owned a 997.1 GT3 (07) and now have '11 .2RS 3.8 (see avatar)
BIG difference in suspension...the .2 is much more stable at speed, no rear bump steer
And the .2's don't leak (ALL 07/08 GT3's leak from RMS, don't let anyone tell you otherwise)
Best of luck with search. As others have said Serge's car is nice if you are ok with higher miles. Full leather and PCCB for under $100k is a deal.

I actually gave myself a budget of up to $140k towards the end of last year to find the right .2 GT3 or .2GT3 RS. I looked at a handful of both and opted for the .2 GT3 as the car was going to be more of weekend/street driven car than it was a track car. With the extra savings, I was able to do a few things like upgrade the LSD, get an exhaust, and put in some suspension goodies with a lot of money left over. If the car would mostly have been a track car, I would have opted for the .2 GT3 RS all day long. The .2 GT3 is actually a fairly comfortable car for driving around locally and still gets a good bit of looks.
