Default Durametric software won't work - help

I got a "check engine light" this weekend on my 997.1 GT3 and tried to diagnose it with the Durametric diagnostic software. However, I can't get the software to communicate with the Durametric cable that plugs into the OBD port. I am running Win7.

I have installed the latest cable driver (I have a second generation cable) from the Durametric Web site and Device Manager in Win7 shows the driver is installed and functioning correctly. I downloaded and installed the latest Durametric software (ver. 6.3.1.7), but when I start it up, it says "cable not ready", which presumably means it is not communicating with the cable. I have used this cable successfully before to install a Softronic ECU flash image, so the cable is functional.

This problem may be related to the confusing screen for selecting the correct engine and transmission:

What are the correct selections here for the 997.1 GT3?

Any help in getting the software to work correctly would be appreciated.

Does it have a VIN slot still available?

If it is the same cable you have used on this car before, I assume it worked fine the last time? Or is this the first time on this VIN?

Are your emergency flashers on after you plug in the cable into OBDII port and turn ignition key to the first position? I believe that is the only way it recognizes GT3/RS from other 997.

I have used the cable before to install the Softronic flash image to the ECU. As I understand it, the same cable is supposed to work with the Durametric software because the software driver is a Durametric driver. I just downloaded the Durametric software (6.3.1.7 which is the current version) from the Web site, so it's the first time I've tried to use it with the cable.

I did have the flashers on because the instructions say to do that, but that doesn't help. On the engine selection screen the only GT3 option is for 2010+ (997.2 but I have a 997.1), which is part of what is confusing. There is a separate GT2/Turbo option, which I also tried but doesn't work either.

I guess I'm stumped here ...

Did you actually pay Durametric for either the 3 VIN unlock (enthusiast version) or unlimited VIN unlock (professional version)?

This cable was purchased as part of the Softronic software package, and was not through Durametric. I thought (maybe mistakenly) that the cable is supposed to work with the Durametric diagnostic software because I've done this before on a Cayman with the version 5 Durametric software using a cable bought as part of a Softronic package. Perhaps this is no longer the case or at least not on the GT3?

It very well may work but it would need to be unlocked by Durametric somehow.

I reverted back to the version 5 Durametric software and hooked it up with an older Softronic/Durametric cable and that worked. The older software doesn't have all the features of the version 6 software and it groups all 997 vehicles together. However, I was able to read out the fault codes that set off my CEL.

The fault codes indicated misfiring on all 6 cylinders, which must somehow be related to brand new spark plugs installed the day before. I'll have to check into this.

In any case, for now I have the answers I need. Thanks all for the help.

Does the Durametric software work with a wireless Bluetooth code reader?
I downloaded the aforementioned Durametric software but it won't run on my Windows 7 laptop

two thing come to mind: is the cable genuine? are you using a high speed usb port (blue), if so, try a normal "slow" port
