maybe you guys can help...my next door neighbor and great friend has a 2001 Carrera he has gutted, added proper aero, caged, proper seat and modded his suspension and brakes. His stock engine has some internal issues starting to show up and he found a place that puts new Vette engines into Porsches. He thinks this is a good idea and his thinking is Vette engines like a Z06 is best bang for the buck and more durable.
I keep seeing and hearing of all the C6 and Z06 Vette losing oil, burning up and so forth. I have tried to point him to these forums but...I don't think he looks here. He is my neighbor and a great friend and I want to get him some proper information. So if anyone can give me some solid info I could print out for him and post here on this thread I could show him I would appreciate it.
I think I have heard of that place, can't remember the name though. And have no idea how reliable their builds have been. I don't think that most of the transplants are ls7's either. Most people go with LS1's (C5 Coupe), LS6 (C5Z) and even some LS3's. Most tend to dry sump the motors as well for reliability.
I think there are some guys in texas with them in miata's. The LS6 is the best of the bunch IMO, most reliable, but like I said, they don't build them any more so finding and unused one is hard.

LS6 Vette engine is reliable, the LS7 in the ZO6 is not. I sold my 2009 ZO6 after having the heads and valves replaced under warranty with only 4,200 gentle miles driven. Many owners are having issues. Tell your neighbor to research www.corvetteforum.com. Go to C6 Section and then to C6ZO6.

any racing engine has to be built up. LSx motor or M9x motor - does not matter. but labor on LS blocks is bit cheaper, parts are cheaper. as of what dies more often - LSx or M9x - it is an open question.
best way for your neighbor is to get in contact with racing crowd, like on this board jrgordonsenior always seems to know about some koni or m96 motors for sale - that is a $9k-$15k budget to fill up.
if your neighbor is building a racing rig then it is pointless to speculae what motor he wants as it will depend of his race class limitations and of what he has set up his mind already.
if he needs a resource on custom LSx block fitment into 996 chassis - www.RenegadeHybrids.com is the one I know about, but honestly it is up to him what to do. if he got a gutted car he can put in any ECU and any motor. or he can spend $10k and fix up his M96 into racing motor that will work just fine. it all depends what power/mass ratio he expects to tune his rig for.

and he also should think about parts availability and future parts pricing on any discontinued motor he decides to use.
again, it is my understanding that if he is joining racing then motor is just a consumable, it is pointless to spend a fortune on custom fit, just get a stock one you find cheap, tune it up slightly and put it in until it blows, then go to next one.
I was very seriously loing into this with the 944 before I sold it. It's obviously a much different situation with a 944 vs a 996, but I do know that you can get some great engines for reasonable prices. I was thinking about something used from maybe a 2004 GTO, but if I had the dough, I would have went with a crate engine from Jegs. It's kind of fun to poke around and see what they've got, for example this LS3 376
