Here are a few more details on what I did.
As mentioned earlier, the sport chrono is only held into the dash with spring clips. a single connector attaches to the clock.

I purchased a new sport chrono housing. Leather covered is around $500. I purchase the non-leather version for about $120.

I knew the Solo DL wouldn't just fit. So let the cutting begin.

I drew up a mount for the Solo DL to fit in the Sport Chrono housing, had it fabricated and used some heavy duty automotive body panel adhesive to attach the pieces.

I should have stopped right around here; actually I should have stopped one step earlier and not sanded the rubberized coating off of the housing. I think this state would work well.
Of course I took it further and intended to blend the housing contour to the Solo DL a little better. Break out the body filler:

I don't think this step is necessary. It added a lot of time to the process and didn't majorly improve the aesthetics.
I'll have to go take a photo of the final product, but you get the idea.
I figured out several things that I would do differently if I made another. If there is enough interest, I could look into making more, but it sounds like you all have a variety of different gadgets to be mounted: IPhone, Traqmate, Racelogic, etc.
