Tire choice: Super Sport or RE-11. Weekend car + 4-5 HPDE/yr.
I'm certain plenty of you have used these tires on both the street and track. I need one tire to cover all my bases and these are my two favorite options. I just can't decide between them. (Sizes are 235/305 FWIW) The car is strickly a weekend/fun car with 4-5 solo HPDE's with the PCA each year.
My main concern is the Super Sports on track behavior/performance, or perhaps lack thereof. Otherwise it would be the clear winner for me. Newer tech tire, 12lbs combined lighter, even marginally cheaper. I have used the RE-11 on track in the past with a different car and thought it was great, and no complaint about it's road characteristics either. So I could really go either way but I thought I'd ask the experts first.
Thoughts?

The RE-11 is a faster track tire, and at this time it is obsolete. Bridgestone just released the RE-11A. Even faster.
Do you drive in the rain? If you do, MPSS is the best choice.
I run RE-11 in the Fiat and Coxster, this past weekend I corded the rear RE-11 after almost 3 years. I was debating about the same, and went with MPSS. For track use, I will run another set of wheels with proper track tires.
My advice, get MPSS for street use, buy a cheap set of used wheels, and fit these used wheels with track tires, Pirelli Trofeo, NT-01, R888, down to fast street tires: Hankook RS3, RE-11A the new Dunlop Z2, or the new BFG Rival.

I don't disagree a second set of track wheels/tires would be the best of both worlds but it's not an option this time. I really don't want another set of wheels in the garage, nor honestly the additional grip the track specific tires would provide. I'm on stock suspension, sways, oil system, etc and don't want to go down the upgrading path with this car. Some Motul/Pads and call it a day.
It's a great overall car that is fun on the street, fun on the track and I don't want to cater too much to either side. Ruin a good thing I suppose. It's always a compromise of course but I just wanted to pick the tire that fits those needs best.
RE-11A is only available in batch of smaller sizes at this point and I don't know when more will be released. I don't drive the car in the rain if I can help it.

When is the RE11A out Rad? Toying with the idea of mounting R6's and driving to Sebring on them from North Palm IF the weather looks ok. Just worried about picking up a flat and/or heat cycling them.

Best info and reviews I've seen about the RE-11A below...also see their write ups on the Dunlop SS ZII, Rival etc. I'm racing on the ZII in a low HP series, great tire for it's moderately high tread wear rating, caveat being that ratings are not standardized.

Here today for the launch of the new BFGoodrich g-Force Rival. Got 10 laps back to back between this and the new Dunlop on an MX5 Cup car. Full second faster on the Rival, which was much easier to drive at the limit. Very forgiving. Z2 was much more peaky with a narrow window at the limit. Rival also loves to make noise.

I love RS3's but they are creeping up in price for the larger sizes...gotta love the 225-45-15's on my track car haha

Did not like the RE-11's and sold them. Love the RS3's. I have them on my street wheels and so far have survived 5K +1 track day and still have tons of tread. Not far off the MSPC's and about $1000/set cheaper.

RS3s- amazing tyres! Out on them for the second time last week. High speed track, 35oC and they did 375 km without a problem... Very predictable and even coped for 25-30 min sessions in that heat! No chunking, no rubber drag and clumping in grooves. My dry track pref by far and as ChrisF said, approaching MPSC level...
MPSS- great as street tyre and fantastic as wet tyre for track. This is what I use on OEM wheels for street and wet track. On warmer days, they start to clump and the rubber does not cope well to long sessions in heat...
Never driven RE11...
Depends on the climate in your parts but if mainly dry, the Hankooks won't disappoint!

Am I putting too much emphasis on the additional weight of the RE-11's? The car has PS2's current which are even lighter surprisingly than the newer Super Sports. So when going from PS2 to RE-11 I'd be adding 18lbs of unsprung mass. Seems crazy to me.
Weights:
PS2: F/R 22/28
PSS: F/R 23/30
RE-11: F/r 27/32

Running forged wheels for dry tyres that reduce unsprung mass by 30+ lbs but don't sense a huge improvement... My pro instructors feel the difference is marginal at best although there... Probably wouldn't worry about it... Only likely to if you were advanced and driving car near the limit.

I've had the RE-11's for a year & done 2 track days thus far. Very good overall tire; not as grippy as MPSC, but way way better in the rain (you still have to drive to the track). Consistent on the track, but watch the pressure....I'm no pro, but I found they get greasy over 35psi. After 1 year they hardly look used.
Another option is the Yokohama Neova which I heard is a little better in the dry but less so in the rain.

On a hot day, you would spend 2 HC on the trip-to, and the trip-from. These tires die from heat cycles, but the extra 2 HC over the 8HC you put in a track weekend are not significant (just add 25% of extra cost on tires, but save on hassle of trailer/truck/etc).
RE-11A are being released slowly, first sizes are out in US, more sizes are available in Japan and you can buy from there online.
