sorry but..the most important thing is that the driver is OK. By the way, this was a 996 GT3..not a 997 GT3..if one believes the official Porsche Marketing, the 991S shouldnt even have to fight with the 996 GT3..

Glad that driver is ok and can write eBay ad. Reminds me to ensure my safety gear including roll cage is up to snuff before going on track.
For my education, I wonder about the tire's condition when blowout happened.

Hokenheim Short lap times:
996.2 GT3 RS 1:11.8
997.1 GT3 1:11.7
997.1 GT3 RS 1:11.1
997.2 GT3 1:10.4
997.2 GT3 RS 1:09.6
997.2 GT3 RS 4.0 1:09.5
991.1 S 1:10.4
996.2 GT3 RS cargraphic (this is the one with 411 hp, suspension, but still with a narrowbody, not with the fender flares) 1:10.3
From this, I wouldn't be surprised if a plain jane 991 GT3 gives the 4.0 a run for it's money.

Clearly the driver's safety is most important, but then we already know he's ok, don't we. If expressing further concern about his well being would help in some way, I do so in a heartbeat. BTW, I'm well aware it was a 996 GT3, obviously track prepped, and apparently on Hoosier competition tires, running against what appeared to be a stock 991S.

Anyway, as said before..so many things can be done on a car....

Sorry to offend; it was a flip comment, the first ever posted by anyone on RL.
It was intended as humor; apparently it missed the mark.

Very likely the driver was on 315 tires (low load for a rear engine car), add the Cup wing downforce and Daytona, and the results were expected.
Daytona needs special alignment, and tires with a much higher load rating. I ran a 345/30R19 design for the Viper ACR (heavier car and gigantic downforce), to be able to feel safe. The only weekend I ran Daytona, there were several tire failure, most of them on Hoosiers (because Hoosiers are popular).
Hoosier makes a 345/35R18, this is the only Hoosier DOT-R tire I would run at the rear of an Aero Beetle, all the other rear sizes that fit do not offer enough load for Daytona and the 31 degrees flatout banking.

The 345/30/19 is actually a bit shorter at 27.15".
Regardless Daytona is a tire killer. It's good to do once as a bucket list but that's it. As weekend motorsport warriors who don't have a massive tire budget it could be dicey.

We ran Daytona last dec...many of us on Hoosiers, the failure is always the right rear tire.
To avoid that we had 2 new sets of tires each, rotated the tires side to side after 3 runs and replaced with new after 6.....checked pressure and temp after each, pressure needed to be 38-42 hot on rears
No issues
The blowouts occured with cars that had old tires or on tires that were not rotated by Sunday
This issue to me is a driver error no less, it is extremely rare to blow out a new tire with adequate pressue at daytona.

A lot of the DE drivers seem to be happy to run saved tyres all the way down to the cord as grip and stability are good at this point but are very susceptible to punchers and blow outs...
it'll be good for parts for someone.
