997.2 GT3 RS Pressure Plate Failue/ Flywheel difference?
Hey guys,
I had issues getting the gears in and had the car checked out at one of the local Porsche dealers in the area. Car is a 2011 with 6.2k miles.
Turned out that the pressure plate broke apart which seem to happen occasionally. They told me that they would fix the car under warranty and that they would replace the pressure plate and clutch. I inquired about upgraded pressure plate, clutch and flywheel of the 4.0 and was told that the replacements items that were ordered had the same item number as the 4.0.
I was told that the flywheel had a scratch but might not need replacement.
I tried to insist on having the flywheel changed but was told today that it did not need replacement.
I am hesitant to insist on a 4.0 flywheel. Does a scratch in the flywheel matter?
Does anyone know the difference in the 3.8 vs 4.0 flywheel?
If the flywheel is indeed different should I pay(if they dont) for a 4.0 flywheel(~$2000) and have them put it in since the transmission a apart?
Thx

I think every 3.8 RS has had the pressure plate fail and replaced with the one from the 4.0 which is much stronger. Haven't heard about the flywheel though. My pressure plate went bad at 10,000 KM (6,200 miles) and was replaced. Symptom was that it was very hard to get the lever out of first gear ... took 2 hands! No issues since.

I'm almost certain the flywheel in the 3.8 and 4.0 RS is the same, it's actually a 964 part number it was an old 964 and 996 cup flywheel. It is different from the 3.6 Flywheels though the 3.6 LWFW was 11.x lbs and the 3.8 / 4.0 flywheel is 8.x lbs

3.8-4.0 RS Same flywheel and pulley. Even the non RS from 2010 has the same pulley, just heavier flywheel. I am putting in the 3.8/4.0 flywheel now, and did not have to change pulley.

I'm in the midst of having the 4 litre flywheel and clutch upgrade installed on my car, and was told by the head mechanic at my local dealer porsche issued a tech bulletin advising replacing the pulley when upgrading to the lighter flywheel..

Just went through this.
Part numbers for upgrade below:
They didn't replace my FW, apparently it was clean.
While inside, I had them re-torque the variocam actuators and pin the coolant lines.
You might want them to look at and/or upgrade your LSD
