I would NOT use safelite. The aftermarket glass is thinner and less rigid and many have reported glass cracking from the stiffness of the GT3 chassis. Not to mention, they do NOT have the experience replacing the windshields and do NOT know all the intricacies. Just asking for substandard work. I have replaced mine a couple months ago and with factory glass installed by the ONLY glass vendor my dealer approves (they do ALL the glass at the dealer) and it was $1100. Replaced on my CAB and Turbo as well in the last year and the cost was nearly identical.
ps. you can knock the cost down to about $800 if you have a cup windshield installed instead of a street glass. The only difference is the antenna (or lack of)

I replaced the windshield on my 996. When I did, I found out it is covered under a different part of my insurance and has only a $50 deductible. They also pay for free unlimited crack repairs. Check your insurance as if you are with a major carrier, you should have something similar. Second, there was no aftermarket windshield available as the antenna is integrated into the windshield for these cars. When I talked to the glass company, they get it directly from the Porsche dealer. You do get to choose which type of tint band you want (there are multiple choices). If you have auto dimming mirrors/rain sensor on your car, you also have a different windshield for the rain sensor. For my windshield replacement, the glass company actually did it at the dealer since that is where they get the windshield.
