Default Dream Drive: Großglockner

I was planning a driving route from Bavaria to Lake Garda in Northern Italy and back to Bavaria and came across this article: http://www.virginmedia.com/motoring/...ves.php?ssid=5
and thought it might be worth pursuing---it was. The pictures I've attached once again don't do the road justice so I've attached the web site to get a better idea:
http://www.grossglockner.at/en/

The road started out with the first picture of my car and within a half hour I was looking at waterfalls and then snow. A half hour or so later, I was surrounded by lush, alpine vegetation all over again. I used 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears too many times to count going up and down this mountain, what a great drive. If you are ever planning a driving tour around Europe put this on the list!

LOL! Great to hear they are being put to proper use - I thought there was something extra special about the wheels on your GT3.

I assume you have your original CL's set up with track rubber for track events at the Ring and others?

Cheers!

I have done that trip many times. I just wish it was with a Porsche.

Hey Doug,

That was the original plan and maybe at some point I will still deposit the second set with Manthey for that very purpose. However, when I shipped the car over it was on a brand new set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports. This is my first set and I had no idea what a great tire it was until I started driving it. It is perfect IMO for driving to and from the track and when the rain inevitably comes they track so well in the wet. Since I have no trailer here, I think this will be the program for me going forward. The price on used OEM rims here is outrageous.......maybe I'll sell them.

+1 on the Supersports. My wifes car has 10K miles on them and a few track laps and there is no wear on them.

The road looks incredible!

My 997.2 came with a fresh set of supersports too. They are the best street tires I've ever driven.

I drove the Grossglockner when I took Euro Delivery of my 330i back in '05 (also drove on the Nordschleife). The Grossglockner is a great way to break in a new car!

+1 on both the Grossglockner and Tourist Delivery. Enjoyed all the pics you guys posted; brought back great memories. I picked up my Carrera S using TD in '09 and did the Grossglockner. A must do. Amazingly I have no pics of the car on the route so threw in one from the next day. Thanks for posting the thread.

+1! Beautiful pic's and thanks for posting them. Happy to see some other RL'ers drove this route too. Expensive these days (32 Euros) but well worth it.
