I have owned them all: 997TT GT2 GT3 and GT2RS. The TT is the best daily driver with its AWD, the GT2 , GT3 and the GT2rs will kill you on a wet road, especially the RS with its shaved tires. If you have only one Porsche then I would buy a TT. It is very quick and also comfortable on the street. My RS is very streetable when the weather is NOT damp. GT2 is the same. Any one of these cars will make you throw rocks at a Viper.

I will be one of the few who says get the GT3. I have had the 930, 993TT, 996TT and 997TT. Unless outright speed is what you want - the GT3 is the better car. To me its the best cross between the feel of the older air cooled stuff and the performance and luxury of the modern 997. Yes - when you drive air cooled stuff the 997 GT3 is modern in comparison. It does have working AC and power steering...

Thanks for all the replies. This has been very interesting reading. When I get serious, I'll be driving both. Right now, I'm really intriqued by the GT3.

Have to say that while I never spent enough time in Vipers to fall for them driving wise, the 97 GTS remains as good looking to me now as it did back then, and that's very good looking. So do the early roadsters in black. Maybe I just couldn't get past the ergonomics...we are so spoiled in Porsches from that perspective.

Agree about their tires when there's standing water (i.e., the freeway in real rain), but have had a lot of great drives in GT3s and GT2 RS in the rain on Michelin MPSCs. I've found they actually offer better grip than Pilot Sports on wet back roads—once they have heat in them. Bit chicken and the egg, of course, and you've gotta watch out for puddles, and mini rivers, etc., but I was surprised by how well they work given how bad they are for hydroplaning. No question, though: Turbo rules for speed in the rain. Even so, I'd choose a GT3 for a fun run. Just more interesting, even if it's slower. But now we are getting into personal preference, and there's no "right" answer.

Thanks for circling back! You've gotten a lot of great advice here, from one of the best forums I've seen when it comes to folks who *really* drive their cars.

So for track use and daily driver;

4.0RS VS GT2RS +/- 200K
3.8RS VS GT2+ moda +/- $135k

What should I buy, anyone have a GT2 I can test drive?

peter - you are most certainly a candidate for 4.0
turbos are not for you, they're no good on track for your linear driving style.
if the ask is too much at the moment, then enjoy the 3.8, save some money and be ready when some guys drop their 4.0's for the latest 991 version.

The proper car for you is the one that you will look forward to driving every day. I also have owned or driven most of the suggested cars, except for a GT2 and have never driven a Viper. I just purchased a 997.2 GT3, which I use almost exclusively for the track, but could easily drive this car more often, but not on a daily basis, much too low and the suspension is very tight - more so than my 360 Spider. Since I wanted a 911 to drive often, I bought a GTS cab, which is a great compromise between a GT3 and a Carrera. I formerly owned a 996 tt cab and did not want another turbo, but if I had never owned a Porsche and wanted a daily driver, but with similar power to a Viper, I would go for a 997 turbo or turbo s. As to a GT2, there may be one available in this area.

Excellence did an article recently on 2 low priced Turbos...one bought for $25k....which had over 128,000 miles and in need of a lot of work (car was bought by a Porsche mechanic who obviously had access to cheap labor ). I have yet to see another one anywhere near that price. On the other end, I sold my pristine 11k mile 2002 996 Turbo last November for mid $50's.

To the OP; I would suggest driving a Turbo, a GT3/RS and a GT2. The "best" car is different for everyone. I owned both the 996 Turbo and an 07 GT3 at the same time over a 4 year period and honestly never drove the Turbo...it was that boring compared to the GT3. But I use the cars as weekend, pleasure only vehicles and the GT3 checks that box better...but no doubt the Turbo would be a better daily driver, and if you LOVE torque that's your car. The 996 TT was also the most rock solid and reliable of the 11 Porsche's I've owned.

Again, the right car is different for everyone...drive all and decide for yourself--it's your money. Best of luck

wsh
I'd be shocked if you can find any 996 TT in the mid 20s. if you do, it is a piece of ****

I could work with that! Is Mancation stopping at Summit Point this summer?

Love the GT2. I only wish it was a few hundred pounds lighter for the track. It's reasonable to drive on the street but not plush by any means. The clutch pedal alone will give you a workout in city traffic.

This is exactly what my 356/930 owning friend said about my GT3 - air cooled DNA in a modern car. 997.2 GT3 is really where it's at...now only if they would start depreciating already!!

Peter, don't know you or your driving style/preferences, but have to think a GT2 would be fun at Sebring...power and torque curves are addictive. But be sure to watch the gas gauge.

GT2 RS is a smaller weight penalty, but you can't hide where it is gained entirely, and the chassis is noticeably different to plain 997 GT2. Prefer the latter for damping on the street, and was very impressed with it at Infineon. But GT2 RS was good on the street and very, very, very good at Laguna. And that day showed me one reason why GT2s make killer track day toys: You pass someone out of a turn and they never see you again.

Highlighted my picks from the above. Pressed for one pick, it'd have to be 4.0...
