I completely respect the S2000. Back in 06, we had a guy with a "stripper" S2000, all the nice mods AND a supercharger. It was insane how fast that car was around the track... Made us GT3 guys feel slow!

Love the car, hate the crowd that owns them. A properly prepared S2000 is a good track car, but an M3 is not a track car, it's a GT (at least the E46 M3 which I owned two of, manual and SMGII).

Problems with the car- fiber impregnated cylinders, oil squirters, synchros (bad owners), diffs that wear out, insufficient brake cooling.
nick, you must know rylan then?
i tracked a stock and i do mean stock s2000 at LS once. i wore out the pads in one day ;-) but it was full driving sideways all day.

i also drove rylan's car, before he force fed it. it's a riot. love those cars.

So much depends on the driver, of course, but the events I've been to with both, the 2-11 tends to be the faster car. Lotus time trial results show 1:36 at Laguna and 1:47 at Sears Point, pretty quick times. Are you running faster than that in your Atom?

Nothing against the 2-11, I think they look great & would be super fun. But in my very biased opinion, the Atom is better in nearly every category, and is street legal in most states (including mine).

The problem with either of these cars at most track days is that they're too fast. Too much time is spent waiting or passing other cars, which also increases the danger. Eventually I quit tracking my Atom for this reason, bought a Spec Miata & went racing.

Just for fun - here's a thread from a Lotus forum, with reaction to a 2-11 getting beat by an Atom (the final post sums it all up nicely):

I had that problem too (I'm 6'4" as well).

I had a BYS (Back yard special) Seat rail which lowered the stock seat roughly 2"

Other comments on the brake pads... yep the stock ones are very, how shall I say 'economical'. Easily fixed with good pads and new brake fluid/ss lines.

I remember running a few good drivers at the DDT track at Mosport, the only 2 that passed me were 1) Modded Exige S 240 and 2) Spec Miata w/ blower.

The guy that owned the miata had to feather the gas as he was sliding around on corded tires. He was impressed with the quickness of the S2K.... he thought I was modded, but all I had was pads, ss lines.

Gary,

Yes, I've done 1:33 at LS and 1:42 at Infineon. The last time I drove it at LS there was a big Lotus event going on, with several serious looking 2-11's. I think their times were around 1:36 that day.

Atoms without the proper tires, setup, and driver have trouble going real fast. So it doesn't surprise me that 2-11's are often faster. But simply switching to Hoosier A6 tires (wider in back) transforms the Atom.

The Lotus' have to use the spec tires for the series, so unfortunately, they don't get to use Hoosiers.

Well, my hat is off to you, those are very quick times. What groups do you run with? I tend to run with Trackmasters and CFRA.
