What about an S2000? Although heavier than a 2-eleven, it’s road legal, less than half the price, and has a highly-regarded engine. The ’08 CR version adds factory aero, stiffer suspension, and reduces weight by 100 pounds. There are a couple different companies making superchargers for the S2000, which can bump power well beyond the SC’ed Toyota engine in the 2-eleven.
I’d be interested to hear from anyone with first hand experience tracking an S2000. How well does the engine and the rest of the car stand up to track usage?

s2000 only good for togue mountain driving.
211 is totally different ball-game in terms of aero, corner-speed and braking.
if you are looking for safety, radical sr-3rs is the way to go. has a new crash-tested nosecone, that the sr-3 didn't have. to me, and from all reports, the atom looks very unsafe.

If the S had 300 NA HP it would truly be one of the best sports cars on the planet. Nothing shifts like that little sweetheart.

I own, arguably, the fastest S2000 in the US at one time- fastest as in holding the lap record at Laguna Seca for S2000s according to www.nsxfiles.com. The S2000 is a great little car, a little anemic, requires a lot of revs to get up to speed, and has quite a bit of bump steer (easily fixed with a lowered steering rack). Love the car, hate the crowd that owns them. A properly prepared S2000 is a good track car, but an M3 is not a track car, it's a GT (at least the E46 M3 which I owned two of, manual and SMGII).
Problems with the car- fiber impregnated cylinders, oil squirters, synchros (bad owners), diffs that wear out, insufficient brake cooling.

Rev_2_8k: Thanks for the feedback. Mention of the S2000 was not so much a comparison as it was a suggestion for the OP to consider a different alternative. Like him, I enjoy open-top cars and I’m considering getting an S2000 to supplement the 6-3 for DE fun with lower running costs. And it does seem that low-end torque should be less of an issue on track vs. street.
Nick: How well do you think a stock, low-mileage S2000 would hold up to 18 DE days per year, typically five 20min sessions per day? What mods are needed to make it live a couple years? You can PM me to avoid a hijack if the list is extensive.

Mike-
A baffled oil pan is all you need. I am particular to Mugen parts for Hondas- I think King Motorsports provides the best service in the country for Hondas and the guys there have always exceeded my expectations. The Mugen oil pan is not expensive at all...

For the story go here-
http://www.nsxfiles.com/s2k_laguna.htm
But to make it easy for you, in 12/2001-1/2002 we went 1.44.xx easily in DE traffic, with a bone stock engine (except for oil pan), trans, and pumpkin.
It took them a year to catch up to us.

Re - S2000 & the OP. He's approx. 6'4" and has problems fitting in many cars. This is likely the reason it wouldn't work for him.
I've never driven one, but I admire S2000's, and in my twisted opinion engines that require high revs are the most fun on track.
My Atom had a similar oil starvation problem, especially in T2 at Thunderhill. Two different baffled pans did not fix the problem, but an Accusump did.
