Default New member (sort of), new 4.0

Hello. I just wanted to say hello/introduce myself. I am sort of a newbie here, though I was a member previously roughly 6 or 7 years ago.

I just took delivery of a 4.0 on Friday. Unfortunately I don't have any good pics yet as I spent the weekend driving.

I also race a 2005 997 Cup (European car) in NASA and POC.

Hope to get to know the group better in the years to come.

Best,
Doc

P.S. Has anyone else noticed the NAV system also contains track maps? I was surprised when my passenger pointed me to the NAV, which showed a map of Willow Springs and exactly where my car was on the track at that moment. Weird. Not like NAV can really help much out there. LOL.

I did notice this as well, but at our NorCal track, Thunderhill in Willows, CA. Kinda funny, but then again, not really, since you can get the track map on Google maps as well.

And you're right, you _can_ get turn by turn directions, but it certainly doesn't show you the proper racing line.

as a CUP car driver, how do you like your 4.0L as a street car?

how do you like the transition between the two?

Sorry for the late response. It took a while to get caught up after the weekend... then I had to take the kids out for Halloween.

Still working on pics. The car's pretty dirty from the weekend and its raining outside right now. But hopefully midday will work for a wash and some pics.

As for the 4.0 vs. cup comparison, in a way I'm surprised at how different they feel. The 4.0 is much more civilized, while the Cup is more of a wild animal. I think each is very well suited to its purpose. For example, the cup car has phenomenal grip on a track where the surface is generally smooth and predictable. The 4.0 gives up some of that ultimate grip, but the additional suspension compliance makes it better suited for real roads where the surface varies much more. The 4.0 is also more forgiving in that it telegraphs the level of grip more clearly. The Cup can bite you much more quickly if you're not careful.

I also think the 4.0 may have better turn in for slower corners. But, at the limit it may have more understeer. That said I haven't adjusted the sway bars in the 4.0. And the Cup is set up primarily for faster corners since the slower corners generally aren't as important to overall lap times at the so cal tracks (excluding streets of willow).

The power band in the 4.0 is much wider, and there's more of it. (My cup dyno'd at 384 at the wheels.) It would be very tempting to run a 4.0 liter motor in the Cup one day.

The transmission in the 4.0 is probably the best manual I have ever experienced. I prefer it to the sequential (and the PDK) for most uses. But, the Cup's sequential transmission (w/ the auto-blipper, in particular) is a better tool for wheel to wheel racing where every fraction of a second is crucial.

Lastly, contrary to what the press says, the 4.0 seems unusually civilized to me. I was hoping that it would be more of a weekend toy. But it's going to be difficult to resist driving it much more often.

Welcome Doc and congrats on the 4.0! Thanks for taking the time to share your comments. Agreed, the 4.0 does come set with a fair amount of understeer After my first track day I immediately moved the rear bar from middle to full tight. Front was already one from full loose so I left it alone. Notable difference on my second track day and I am happy with the balance now. As you noted, it is a very compliant suspension which works well on bumpy tracks but does allow for a lot of body roll on faster corners. Again I concur with your observation as to sharp turn-in and I noted transitions are snappy too. Soft springs and good damping eh?

Aside from the Boy Racer look, it would make an awesome daily driver!

More pics please

Options on the car are as follows:

XMJ Rear Center Console Carbon 1,625.00
347 Wheels painted in GT Silver Me 0.00
450 Ceramic Composite Brakes-PCCB 8,840.00
474 Front Axle Lifting System 3,490.00
490 Sound Package Plus 700.00
603 Dynamic Cornering Lights 690.00
P23 PCM 3.0 w/ Extended Navigation 3,110.00
640 Sport Chrono Package Plus 690.00
686 XM® Radio 750.00

I'm not sure whether I will replace the PCCBs in the event that I do any serious track events in the car. I might try the track pads for the PCCBs for places like Willow Springs (big track) as its not too hard on brakes. Cal Speedway is a different story.

Here are a few pics a friend took at the track this weekend ... Just quick, taken in the pits on Sat.

I'll take some more shots today. The ones I posted are a little limited in terms of what they show.

Anything in particular you guys want to see?

Will be off for a while and check in later before taking the pics.

Cheers.
