Default The next best car to a GT3? Cayman R or 911 Turbo?

I was just wondering.....if you had to give up your GT3, and the GT2 was not an option, what would you choose?

It has to be a car that can be driven year round, including the snow season and one that will be stellar on the track!

Cayman R or 911 Turbo?
Any other non-Porsche vehicle? Like a Corvette ZR1, or BMW M3?

Stellar on the track and snow season driving? opposites.

Cayman/Boxster are horrible in the snow, even with snow tires, no traction. Tested. ZR1, M3, Viper, are horrible in the snow. GT3 is fine in the snow with snow tires, but very low clearance due to the front spoiler

You need AWD, so get a Cayenne, Panamera, Carrera 4, 911 Turbo or Turbo S. You should also consider the Audi R8 and Gallardo.

For track capable car that I can drive on snow I would choose the R8 GT. A less fun option but plenty fast at the track (seriously fast) is the 2011 Turbo S.

Sacrilege to some but I'd include the GTR and new ZO6.

Carrera GTS coupe, six-speed manual, standard suspension, light on the options.

I'd strongly consider five-lug wheels, both because I like them better and because it would make fitting the best snow wheels/tires a cinch.

The "next-best" car to a GT3, for my money, would be a Turbo. Proven chassis, reliable motor, good power, predictable handling, and no nasty surprises as the car ages and wears. Can't say this for a non-911, I think.

I wouldn't put the Cayman R in this category since its chassis and motor are inherently less proven than the 997's. I've read way too many "we're going to build a 911 beater when we put xyz in a Cayman" articles, and I'm not seeing these mythical hybrids actually proving themselves on the street or on the track. There always seems something else to break. For real, hard, long-term use, I'd go with a 997.

Disclaimer: I have a Cayman R on order.

So far, it looks like the popular choices are:
1. 911 Turbo - beneficial as its proven and has 4WD
2. 911 GTS Coupe - because its almost a GT3!! :-)
3. Cayman R - almost there! But not quite as proven as a 911!!!

I am beginning to think that the best non-Porsche car out there that can do almost everything is a Skyline GTR: Good horsepower, handling, lap times, all wheel drive, room for 4 etc...although I'm not excited about the brand and cosmetics compared to a Porsche.
I've also heard that GTR's tend to overheat quite a bit on the track + I prefer cars with less electronic assistance for a more 'pure' driving experience!

Corvettes are impressive on the track, and are apparently a blast to drive if you can look beyond the plastic! But they also suffer from that "I'm over 50 image, and I want to drive a sports car before I retire!!"..no offensive to anyone over 50!!!! :-)

...Good thing I don't have to give up my GT3/RS! Best drive of all the cars mentioned on this thread. I'd suggest trying some seat time in the best candidates as some provided a better experience than expected.

GTR's don't last with lot of track time.
I second the R8 as a non P car option.

Personally for the money and a 996 GT3 wasn't an option. I'd go with a 996TT x50. 300 lbs more then the GT3 but still feels pretty raw compared to a 997TT. It's AWD but it's a much different system then the 997. It's 95% rear 99% of the time.
Also it can keep up to any GT3 in the corners with the same tire compound.

I wouldn't exclude the Cayman R. It has the same engine design as the 997.2 though it's a 3.4l. Toronto winters are not that bad. With snow tires it would do just fine on the bad days. Though ride height is a problem for any P car.
I'd imagine seeing these be able to keep up to any 911 in the corners with the same tire compound and it does have a fair bit of hp to be a lot of fun but not enough to get your self in trouble like the 997 GT3. The straights are where you will be left behind though.

Imagine a Cayman R with one of these Turbo Kits + tuned suspension / good track compound!
http://www.tpcracing.net/products/TP...n-S-Turbo-Kit/

This would be quite a P car!

Another thought....perhaps I add a wheel axle lift system to the GT3, remove the front splitter and drive it all year round! Including the snow!
