Default Is CAN bus available aywhere under dash area?

Hi,

question is if in 997 cars CAN bus was available anywhere in the front area or is the only spot where you can tap into it (for data logger install) is under rear panel where ECU sits?
I assumed it had to be somewhere in front dash too but looked at wiring diagrams and it is not very clear to me. does anybody here have an answer?

Regards, Paul.

I believe in the footwell, above your clutch foot.

The car is supposed to have an OBDII connector located very close to the driver.

Check under the dash. You'll have to get down low cause the connector may be a bit behind the curve of the bottom of the dash.

Look for a flattened D connector with 16 holes though not all will be populated with metal sockets for the pins. The connector plastic might be pink, or light purple.

Here's a link to a google search that shows a bunch of OBD2 connectors:

http://www.google.com/search?q=obd2+...2&ved=0CEAQsAQ

FWIW, the engine controller protocol might not be CAN. In some cars Porsche uses KWP2000 or ISO-9141-2 and reserves CAN for the 'comfort' bus (radio, stereo, perhaps the instrument cluster).

Auto makers were supposed to switch over to CAN in '08 but some (and this includes Porsche) received permission to postpone the move to CAN.

Sincerely,

Macster.

I was told by aim that they have not written the protocol for 997 cars to use the simple obd cable to run their dash off the obd port

when looking for CANbus/OBD connectors to make use of, be sure that you are using a connector that is designed for regular use. Some connectors are likely to fail if used too frequently (don't ask me why, its a dumb economy that companies like Lada learned to avoid)
