Anyway, the camera never has the same vision as the driver and the driver is looking out past the cars in front, remembering previous laps and so on.
This video reminds me of the story where Walter Rohrl is racing at the Nurburgring in the rain (and the dark) but cannot shake the cars behind him, and yet they do not close in and pass. Eventually, he "clicks" and realizes all he has to do is turn off his rain/fog lamp and his tail/brake lights. The cars behind immediately lose contact and he's away.
Rather like learning to ride a motorcycle at the track -- with a good instructor, you can follow them on their bike, close in so your front tire is within a couple of feet of their rear tire. Then it's easy: lean when they lean, power when they twist on power, brake when they squeeze on brakes. In a few laps, you're circulating with no trouble. Then, they wave you by to follow you. You can't match that same lap time within even ten seconds! When to lean in, when to roll on power, when to brake?! And where's the line? ... : )
