Paul, I'm glad you followed your gut. You should be comfortable before going into a major surgery and trust your doctor. If it doesn't feel right, don't do it.
Surgeries have a lot to do with luck, so don't rush it. Good luck with the surgery, and do your research.

"I need some more opinions."
Paul, you're getting some good advice on this board. It seems the general consensus is that back surgery is a last resort procedure.
My wife had major problems in the L3 to L5 area, which included a 10mm spinal offset. We're talking major nerve problems. Anyway, she has been working for 3 orthopedic surgeron for over 20 years. They do not work on spines. They recommended Dr. Erik Spayde in Thousand Oaks (805-379-2322). Since her surgery, we also recommend him. She is back to riding horses.
BTW I spent many a day on that hot tarmac out at the lake. Was a Sr. Systems Engr. for Hughes and later Raytheon.

Well I bailed. I walked in this morning to the hospital, something was not right. I waited for an hour.
They brought me into the surgery waiting room. I got down to the gown and i was sweating profusely.
I felt something was just not right. My BP was 166/110 thats not a good sign. I told the nurse and she said its best to follow your gut feelings on these major services. I called in my wife and I decided to bail.
The nurse tried to infer she did not like the Doc I was using and told me if I wanted to leave I should do so.
SO I did.
I need some more opinions.
thanks for all your thoughts and prayers, you guys are the best.

Well, like I said guys I am looking for another opinion. I had a bad feeling walking in the hospital today.
Something did not feel right. And when the nurse told me that I should follow my gut, I had Merritt come in an we talked about it. She wanted me to have the surgery, and I wanted to find another way. The nurse talked my wife into letting me go. She said let your husband trust his instinct. I think I just need to see another doc. We got the feeling the nurse didnt like the doc I was going to use.
Anybody have any favorites in southern California?
Thanks BOB!!! SO nice to hear from you again!!!!

Good decision on trusting your instinct. When the Nurse is telling you to "trust your instinct" She is basically telling you to find another physician. I am a pain specialist. PM me if you have any questions. The sucess of spine surgery is quite low when you are going "under the knife" for the 2nd or 3rd time. So it really should be a thought out decision!

I am a little bit worried but who isnt with a major surgery. Its quite extensive.
3 discs replaced and two rods!! I hope the rods are Carbon Fiber!
If anyone has back problems and dont like to talk about it. If you need help and I can given you some ideas about different types of treament and procedures, and give you some tips on how NOT to do this.

Did you have cages implanted?
PEEK?
My L5/S1 ruptured and herniated 11mm. Which is huge amount.
Couldnt stand for more than 12 seconds. Forget sitting.
Had a microdisectomy......and back to normal.
PM me and let me know what you were going in for? Sometimes plates and screws can impinge a nerve root, making it worse.
