Interesting thread. I chose not to go with the diesel route, and went with the 09 F150 with a max trailer tow package, (11,300 lb capacity) . Not a dualie. Best part about it is the integration of the electric brakes and the trailer dynamics into the suspension control system. It's a better tow than my 04, set up the same way. I tow an enclosed Wells Cargo 20', and I've seen teens for mileage (while towing) on the LA to Baker run. This setup gets about 40-50 miles better per tank than my old rig despite a higher (numerically) rear end ratio, with a smaller tank (30 gallons on the old, 26 on the new).

Maybe fleet or other commercial buyers have access to older engines?

Also, in the higher rated Super Duty models (450, 550) which are pretty much only commercial vehicle sales, the diesel is the only engine available and it's detuned to preserve the transmission. Again, maybe there are non-consumer options that I haven't seen.

Still and all the same, I agree with the advice to resist being drawn into buying a diesel for the wrong reasons. I have a (very wealthy) friend who operates a roadside diesel maintenance business (they can do everything up to transmission replacement in a truck stop to keep fleets in service and on the road.) He advises against the diesels unless you have a need.

Pros:
* mpg when towing (call it 10-12mpg versus 5-8 gas when heavily laden.)
* durability if you intend to keep a truck and tow for 100K+ miles
* resale value (the diesels are preferred and command higher resale)
* drive under warranty or extended warranty (100K emissions coverage includes the turbo, etc.)
* stump pulling torque for off-road 4x4 4WD travel or fun
* ***** enlargement

Cons:
* much higher up-front purchase price
* diesel isn't cheaper than gas any more
* noisy, smelly, require warm-up and cool-down
* extremely high repair costs are a real risk
* heavy engine results in worse ride from stiffer front springs
* slower throttle response
Just to be clear, I did get a 2011 V10 from ford, it is still available and the truck is an F450, here are a few pics of it for reference. This is one of the smaller ones.

All the other info posted by you is absolutely correct, and very informative to anyone who is looking at the benefits/disadvantages of gas/diesel. Great post.

Right. Found it:
http://www.ford.com/trucks/superduty...#page=Feature8
This is on F450 and larger.
362 horsepower and 457 lb.-ft. of torque.
Not the 400 over 800 of the squeezer, but surely ample for 10-12K lb trailer.
I can see why the 6.2 V8, with 385 horsepower and 405 lb.-ft. of torque is ample for the F250. I wonder if the operating costs of the V10 become an issue after initial warranty.
I imagine 385/405 compares well enough to the 325/570 of the 6.0 turbo diesel dating back to '05.
A pity Ford doesn't combine the more powerful engine and 4x4 drivetrain features of the F Series Super Duty with the E Series van to let customers build their own Excursion 4x4.

Update: ford cancelled my order because they cannot get nav systems out of post earthquake Japan... Only "in stock" ford in my "area" that fits my specs is in Utah and the dealer in Utah will not transfer it to my local dealer without making money thereby increasing my cost.

So picking up GMC 3500 Denali Diesel today from a dealer in Portland

The duramax/Allison combo is pretty nice and the gmc dealer was able to put together a deal that negated my fleet discount from Ford.

Ford relies upon pickup sales to make its numbers, if they don't have nav for pickups, they probably don't have them for all kinds of SUVs and crossover types -- should kill their revenue. Toyota went from "minimal concerns" to "limited impact" to ... 70% drop year-over-year ... yikes!

Transfer flow in Chino CA.
Full size bed will fit 110Gal, short bed like me 75Gal. Plus OEM tank.
Don't forget wake the dead 150dB air horn to clear left lane and rimind other drivers that they are driving.
LineX bed.

So far, I only have 10K miles on the Dodge, but I love it. Cummins only 650LB and 350HP 6 speed. new ones have 800LB 350HP 8 speed.

2Can't buy Chevy after the last POS put me on the side of the road countless times, sold it with 60K miles.
Fords all lasted 150K miles, also trouble. last Dodge only had 40K miles, not 1 issue yet anyway.

I get 7-9MPG going 80MPH - 90MPH with 2 cars in trailer.
Last Dodge got better MPG because it was 2WD.
I can get 10MPG but you have to go 70-75, no hills.
If you care about MPG find the fastest truck and draft.

Driving around town 15MPG I think, last one 2 MPG better.

The trailer is more important than truck, needs pointy nose with bubble to go fast.

I like PJ, color matched to the enhanced RS (except for the chrome wheels). Suspect those won't last long. Nice size pipe you got there!

fleet vehicles at my place are all white... I find it easier to dissappear it into the business if I get itchy for something different... and I like white.

The chrome wheels are staying as my soon to be new trailer has shiny wheels as well.
