I used to drive the 996 GT3 on Micheline PS3s on snow covered roads in winter,... maybe it's something about the manual transmission and better control of the car. It felt far better than my Lexus IS-F in the snow. I've grown up now!

Similar dilemma here...
I need something that tows a light load (jetski), 4 door (to accomodate nieces or parents), something that i can shove a couple GT3 wheels into for tyre changes, something that ain't worth a fortune as it spends 9 hours a day coping dints in a shopping centre car park and something that has some zip so I don't go into withdrawal considering my current car is a Nissan S15 Sylvia...
Had considered a small SUV like the Forrester XT but found its great till it takes a corner and it body rolls like a cow... as do most SUVs... Also tried X1 diesel- no *****...
I will most likely be settling for a 2011 WRX hatch... To date, the best I have managed in the way of a compromise although I'm not a big hatch fan.. Low cost maintenance and reliabilty are swaying me this way for the moment...

I went and checked up how the IS-F does in the snow,... http://my.is/forums/f136/f-snow-403062/.
At least that's what I do in the M3.
I do turn on the DSC system on the highway, though. At higher speeds I don't trust myself to react fast enough with all the possible distractions. Changing the radio station or just plain daydreaming may take enough attention away to catch me off guard. Having racetrack level of concentration during the commute is a bit much.
The claim that an IS-F is able to outaccelerate any AWD car (and I mean ANY and not just some high HP car) on snow is BS. Either the other driver wasn't trying, had bad tires, or was on the more slippery side of the road.

I am currently in a 2010 Lexus IS-F. It was the one car compromise for the wife and I. I can't do it - so I'm going for the 997.2 GT3 and a DD that I have not decided upon.
I wanted to ask what you guys have as the DD? I am looking for something practical, good value, great if it was AWD, low maintenance costs, reliable and good on gas. Doesn't need to be any fun at all.
Suggestions are most welcome. Some thoughts:
BMW X3
BMW X1 (due out soon)
Lexus IS 250 AWD
Lexus RX
My wife hates Audi's so I can't do an A4/Q5, etc. Would love to hear everyone else's thoughts!

^ love the sig. Check out a TDI (turbo diesel) vw or audi. Solid cars and great for daily driver...lots of low end torque and you can tune it and make gobs more power. Or the 335d (diesel) not sure if they make it in X (awd) if in diesel.

Lol Sam,... glad it's all looking good.
I would love the TDI. I had a chance to drive a few examples in Europe and they were fantastic. The issue is that Diesel is not offered at all gas stations in Canada. I would be game for one after driving it. The torque and fuel economy is truly amazing!

No major issues finding filling stations.
I use Petro Canada and found that if the station is close to a major highway it will offer diesel. Stations relatively far from highway ramps (inside neighborhoods) generally don't have diesel.
Same deal with Esso.
And yes, the X5 d rocks. Pulls like a train and doesn't consume that much fuel. Averaging 11 l/100 with very mixed driving and occasional driving by me (fuel mileage suffers from that )
The only catch with filling diesel is that the pump hose has to be diesel specific. Most stations are properly equipped but some are a bit old and use a gasoline hose. Will not work. There is an interlock in the filler. Also big truck hoses don't work unlike in my GMC.
And the other issue is that there are usually only two hoses for diesel for the whole station and often an idiot will be filling gas at the same spot when there are 5 other gas spots available.
But you don't have to fill up so often and now you pay less per liter. Locally diesel was 8 cents per liter cheaper than 87 gas and I don't know how much cheaper than 91/94 which is what should be used in a luxury SUV anyway.
