maybe open aluminum trailer and car is good for X5 or Cayenne. you really want some weight and long wheelbase to tow 7500lbs. i have seen people try to tow with X5 V8 down grapevine in california. only once they tried it and then realize the trailer is causing the rear of their vehicle to wiggle quite wildly when wind picks up. Tail wagging dog, don't work. I bought a used F350 crew cab extended bed. it was longer than my house. I had to repeatedly look back and make sure the trailer was still attached at first because you really do not notice it back there when towing full load. That truck just gobbled up highway and you have to run V1 bc you will speed way to easily in that monster and not notice it. Its like driving a big recliner. I had to fight the urge not to put cruise control on and put my feet up on dash. Just make sure you have 3 football fields between you and next car up front. Not because it can't stop well, but because it stops so well your trailer brakes will be quickly overpowered. That truck had 90K miles with tow package and i bought it for 12k. go for something like that just for towing or moving an entire house. get a nice sport wagon for daily errands. I dare say maybe even check out the caddy wagon or new E-class 4matic wagon.
btw, i'm currently debating similar thing. right now its between Cay Hybrid or X5 Diesel. going to probably just occasionally tow the RS but on an open aluminum trailer. Also need a support vehicle for my son's go-kart as we are getting into that now. probably replacing M3 sedan which really pains me to do. Anyways, I like that the Cayenne has the 8speed. I rode in the hybrid at the porsche sport driving school. it has plenty of pickup, goes around a track pretty nicely, and really spooky being dead quiet driving around the paddock. really like the interior and the air suspension rocks! i actually love the panamera console. looks like a cockpit.
BMW will most likely have their X5 40d next model year for US. This will hopefully also get an 8speed, regen braking, triple spool turbo, and a host of other efficient dynamics updates. The current X5 35d retains old 6speed gearbox, but they do say its not big difference on fuel efficiency. i beg to differ at autobahn speeds. maybe not really a big deal on US streets. I like that it has 3rd row seat as option although only 2 little kids can fit there or inlaws that you want to torture. if 3rd row is used, no room in car for anything.

i know trucks wont fit everyone.
if one insists on towing with suv, a high qty open trailer is great too.

Range Rover Sport should fit all of your criteria as well. Rumor has it that the 2012 version will be 40% lighter and more fuel efficient. Has adequate towing capacity and bigger wheel base than Cayenne. And a nice interior!

Thanks again everybody for the feedback. If I am going to tow the GT3 in the enclosed trailer for any distance I plan on going in 3/4 ton GMC with my sister who needs it to pull a big horse trailer.
I'm going to take a serious look at the Cayenne S Hybrid + aluminum trailer option and keep the enclosed box for winter storage for one of the cars.
