I think this was in the 50's. Might have been an Australian invention?

The idea was funded by US military to develop a platform for soldiers/marines to take beachheads, etc. from 1000 feet above instead of splashing up on the surf. Some say the conspiracy theory of those prototypes becoming real aren't too far from the fact. After all, given unlimited budget and half a century, even the US military can make something fly ... just not the Osprey, that's all.

I think this would be a very cool toy for the rich! But it has to be much much smaller and better packaged. As it is, it looks like you are strapped onto two fifty gallon drums and some homemade engine... the exposed joystick linkage doesn't help either...
