Default 997.2 GT3 Oil Consumption

Just passed 1,650 miles in my car, never topped up the oil and its still showing as full. Is this normal?

In common with others on here, I have nailed my car from the start and ignored the break-in guidance in the manual. I get the usual smoke on start up if its not been used for a bit.

Any views?

No oil added/needed up to first oil change at end of a by the book break-in. 600 miles since then and the oil still reads full.

I get start up smoke from time to time, but letting the car idle for 3min before shutting down seems to make the minor annoyance go away.

Mine is about 1,300 miles and no oil needed. I followed the break-in procedure, but I revved it well to 4K-5K rpm all the time. There was some smoke during startup if I didn't drive the car a few days. Also did the 1,000 mile oil change. Car runs great.

Regards,

Your experience with your engine is within the normal behavior range.

Engine might have used some oil, just the type of driving you do might have added water/unburned fuel to the oil which makes up for the oil consumed and keeps the level high.

Sometimes a nice long drive with no A/C and some stop/go driving on a mild day will get the engine oil nice and hot and the water/unburned fuel will boil away and the oil level drops and it looks like the engine's suddenly used maybe a half a quart of oil.

Hope you elect to change the oil/filter soon.

Sincerely,

Macster.

Ditto except I've followed the running-in procedure - I was quite surprised. I asked my OPC about changing the oil but they advised me that it was unnecessary.

7200 miles now and haven't used a drop of oil. Changed oil at aprox. 5K miles and all is well.

Shouldn't that be "a segment of oil" ?

Question;

Why did you ignore the break in guidance from the Manual??

How long were you suppposed to break in the car?

The break in procedure in the US is different to ours CM. They are required to keep rpms below 4200 or so for 2000 miles. Many engine builders on this forum and others suggest a more aggresive approach to seat rings and everything.

Our manual procedure, requires long drives, well heated motor before picking up the revs and no WOT for the first 3000km... There are no rev restrictions as long as you aren't redlining the sh#t out of it so we can drive them more aggresively....

At 1600km I dumped all oils and the head motorsport technician said to drive it like I'd stolen it from there on in. He stated that he was more conservative with his recommendations until he went to the factory and saw what they did with the GT cars and motorsport stuff. Full dyno to full rpms and once the cars were finished, they'd roll out of factory and onto track where they were run at full tilt.... Thus it would seem that Porsche do the important aspects of the run in themselves for these cars....

He does all the motorsport rebuilds for the cup cars at the local dealer and also told me to follow my instinct and dump the oils, contrary to the advise of the service department. I went with the advice of the guy with the hands on experience and some of the more experienced guys on this forum...

I should mention, no noticeable oil consumption and only the rarest puff on start up... something must be working right...

I stand corrected. Haven't dropped a "segment".

I have been really impressed with this engine. Wonder how Porsche will improve on the GT-1. With all the comments on oil usage on the 997.2/DFI engines I think we might just have the last and best of the breed. Not to say that the next generation won't be more powerful and efficient, but i think the GT-1 will make it's mark in Porsche history.

I had to add 1 liter of oil after about 7000km on mine. Mind you the car has been used quite extensively on the Nordschleife. Indicator was 1 block above the minimum line.

Mine blew smoke 9 out of 10 times until I took it to the track, now rarely a blue cloud at start up.
