Default 997 GT3 RS mk II - start off in 2nd gear!

Was browsing through the manual for GT3/GT3 RS mk 2s, there was a sticker in there stating that it is recommended specifically for RSs to start off in 2nd gear, given even surface :0

Just found it curious and went to try it, starting off in 2nd gear in my GT3 didn't feel that good.

That should not be good at all for the trans or engine....

The RS has shorter gears doesn't it? Or does that not include 2nd?

My guess is fuel economy is the reason if second is short enough to start from. Of course I still wouldn't do it.

Wouldn't that kinda have the same effect as lugging the engine?

Final drive is shorter and 6th is taller. First through fifth are the same gears as regular GT3s.

Your statement is correct but to clarify, the maximum speeds in gears 1-5 are lower than the 996 or Mk 1 997Gt3/RS. On track I have to use 3rd where second was the choice on my Mk1 for example.

Partially true. Surprisingly, the overall gear ratio between a GT3 and a Carrera are about the same. The GT3 gets a higher top speed in each gear due to the higher rev limit. In my previous Carrera, 3rd gear was good for about 100. In the GT3, 3rd gear goes up to about 115. First through 5th are 13% shorter due the final drive change in the new RS, giving a top speed in each of these gears similar to a Carrera. This means about 10 mph less top end in second and 15 mph less in 3rd versus a regular GT3. This difference should not make any difference in whether to start out in first or second.

That doesn't sound right - if 2nd is a low enough gear to start off on, then why even have 1st? Its not like we're driving Land Rovers and need to climb a mountain in 1st gear.

+1
The manual says never lug the engine at all times.

Here's a picture of it. Page 142, section "Shifting Gears". You can see that it's a sticker. UK spec car (and manual, I assume), if that makes a difference.

So it's a sticker added after printing? I need to check my manual.

It is a sticker, and the same is in the manual for the continental Europe.
Best,

It's clearly for saving fuel, and really not such a bad idea on a flat or downward surface if you have ample torque and low gearing.

As '10 GT3' stated, for the 7.2 RS, final drive and 6th gear are modified. The result is that 1st through 5th gears are 11% shorter than the GT3, with 6th being 5% shorter.
