Default Best Driving Roads on the Planet...

In October 2008, I started two simultaneous threads on www.ferrarichat.com and www.m3post.com querying
people to list the best driving roads in the world. The
thread saw hundreds of lookups, with people contributing
their individual thoughts on what public roads offered
the best driving.

The list below is as of Jan 4th, 2009. Another year has
gone by and its time that the Porsche heads appended
to the list. So....if you have an idea, please append in the
proper place and repost the NEW post only. In the end
we will be left with a fresh pristine list that anyone can
copy-paste for personal use.

I did not know know which place on Rennlist to put this
on but I'm betting that it will grow a LOT!!

Enjoy!

Thanks.
I've added these to my Bucket List. Heluva lot more appealing than driving around in circles.

The last 8 miles of Wentworth Springs Road is my favorite. At the 38 second mark - that corner is bliss.

I used to lose my mind riding my Ducati 999S on this road...

Col De Turini is a famous mountain top in the south of France and is part of a 32 km rally stage starting from Sospel to La Bollène. It is the highest point in the stage standing at 1607 metres. This stretch of road is one of the most difficult and dangerous but also exciting stages in the WRC. It has the long straights where cars reach upto 180 km/h, 34 challenging hairpins and awesome views – all the things that make for one of the best driving roads in the world.

San Bernardino Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2065 meters in the Swiss Alps connecting the towns of Hinterrhein and Misox. This road has its share of bends and hairpins but is more known for its scenic views and smooth roads. It also has a 6.6 km long tunnel but with a speed limit of 80km/h (50mph).

Stelvio pass was fun, along with Fluelapass on to Umbrail pass.

The road to Montpellier over the Millau Bridge is great for a rip!

The 101, LA to SF?!? 101 beyond Santa Barbara, but not in LA. It's in lousy shape until you get beyond Santa Barbara (SF & north it's nice).

Got to meet one of CA's finest on the 46 last year. 95+, but no tix, thank goodness.

I kind of like the 110 thru downtown LA--at about 5AM on Christmas morning =)

Referencing the OP, on Top Gear Season 10 Episode 1 the guys try to find the best driving roads in Europe. This episode has some great photography/video sequences. They ultimately decide that Davos to the Stelvio Pass is the best, but there are few other favs on the way (Col De Turini is one of them)

Oh, by the way, they take a GT3RS.1 and 2 other lesser vehicles with them.

You can download the episode on iTunes.

Also, on an upcoming TG episode they look for the best driving roads starting in Romania. Check BBC America listing: it's on in a week or 2

Great stuff! Have to endorse the St. Moritz to Lake Como stretch as well (first picture), along with Julier Pass (Chur, CH to Silvaplana, CH). (Picture #2). Absolutely consider Independence Pass, Colorado Westward from Leadville to Aspen (Pic #3)

Also, in California, specifically Rt 41, to Rt 229 to Rt 58. (Video)

You can add a new section for the Middle East:
- Jebel Hafeet Road in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Switchbacks and tight curves galore with perfect asphalt and lighting. It's like a special section of a WRC Rally
- Mussandam road, Oman. Coast road along the Gulf. Too many cars on weekends, though.

An in Europe, of course, any of the mountain roads in Corsica. Some of the special sections of the Corsica Rally are legendary: Scala di Santa Regina, Défilé de l'Inzecca, Col de Bavella, Porto to Piana... The list never ends!!

Grimsel Pass to Furka Pass in Switzerland. Did this route a few years back. Jawdropping scenery and endless curves.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furka_Pass
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grimsel_Pass

Alternatively, you can go right instead of left at the top of the Grimsel Pass and head to the Nufenen Pass (Passo dello Novena):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nufenen_Pass

Bottom-line, there are no wrong turns once you're in that part of the world.
