A 430 Scud out of the box is an incredible machine... now if only they could make them hold up as well as a 30 year old air cooled Porsche...

German Durability > Italian

Italian Materials > German

Jeremy Clarkson said it best, "Hand made is just a fancy way of saying the doors will fall off."

Just open any 740 2001 and see what i mean.
I totally agree with you. Although i don't have a 7er but my M3 with Extended Novillo Leather, which has the dash, rear console as well as seats and doors in leather smells great. It almost smells kind of sweet, especially when I get in it just after driving another vehicle. That smell just makes me feel so happy.

I always loved that smell to until I picked up my E60 M5 which had a disclaimer in it that the new car smell contained carcinogens.

leather is not about the aroma. that's cheap to do.
leather quality is defined by grain, thickness, softness, texture, durability, ...

I have been trying to figure out how much weight, leather adds to the dash of a GT3RS or even a typical 911. Would anyone happen to know this?

Cheers

I have a 08 335i and a 06 X5 4.8i and my 09 C2S is just as good.
Several have said it better. Porsche holds up better longer. I have to admit I have driven a 360
and sat in a 430, and its just overwhelming eye candy. Almost takes your mind off what youre doing.
Not good at 160++.

But here is the thing that you are missing Italian Cows are MUCH different than German Cows.
I ran a large cattle ranch as a kid. I had one steer and one dairy heifer. unfortunately
beef prices forced me out at 17. Anyway Italian cows are used for their leather early
get lots of olive oil, etc. Think Sophia Loren at 20.
German cows live longer to make sure they can hack the 30-40 years in a Porsche,
eat dry diets. Think Cloris Leachman in Young Frankenstein.
Germans could use much younger cows but they wouldnt last long.

I would say the taste level of a Ferrari interior is somewhat better than a Porsche and that's the biggest difference. I don't believe it's down to the materials.

Otherwise the cabins that most impressed me recently were the Panamera and the Range Rover.

Without a question; the more expensive car, the more expensive the materials. When I had a Miata, it had some of the cheapest/cr*ppiest leather on the planet. I conditioned it every 2 weeks and the bolsters were still cracked in a year. I even met with a factory rep and he told me mine was better than any other one he saw. My Infiniti's leather looked better at 2 years than the Miata at one, but still had some minor creases and cracks. My 996's leather at 4 years looks better than my Infiniti did at 2 months. At 7 years, I still don't have a single crack in the 996 leather.
