Default Traqmate RPM sensor connection

Hello All!

Anybody have any first hand experience of what to connect the RPM sensor wire to? I have the wire run to the engine compartment (hope that is right) but can also run in to the drivers area if needed. This will be installed in a 2010 GT3 RX. The rest of the system including the chase cam is installed and running.

I have a tech session with Peter Krause down at VIR next week for traqmate analysis, so hope to be fully operational by then.

Thanks in advance for any info!

I have no experience with Traqmate, but I did get an RPM signal for my RacePak. They sell an inductive pickup sensor that essentially clamps around a spark plug signal wire. Since our cars have coils mounted on each plug, you simply need to clamp the pickup around one of the signal wires that lead to the coil. The easiest place to do that is right at the DME on the rear parcel shelf. There are 6 green wires (actually green with a different color stripe), one for each cylinder, and you just need to pick any one of those. If you want to try this, let me know, I believe I have a schematic of the DME signals that gave me the color codes for the wires.

I bought the RPM sensor for my Traqmate when I picked up the GT3 but I haven't found/made the time to wire it up yet. I was hoping someone would pitch in with some advice in this thread.

All I know is what I cribbed from a thread on the Traqmate forums, but I'm pretty ignorant about what actually has to happen. I figure I'll just wing it when I dig in there and it'll work out like it always does.

One of our dealers, Stable Energies, has done this installation a couple of times on Porsche 997s and was gracious enough to share their secret. We have not independently verified this information so all disclaimers apply.

To connect a tach signal on a Porsche 997:

Locate the ECU box on the interior of the car behind the rear passenger/cargo area under the window and between the shock towers.

Locate Connector E on the passenger (lefthand drive) side of the ECU box.

Locate Pin 6 on Connector E. It should be a Green wire with Blue tracer

Tap that wire and run to RPM input on TraqTach, TraqData, or TraqSync devices

For TraqData or old model TraqTach (grey plastic), you will need the COIL type of device.
For TraqSync or new model TraqTach (black plastic) you will need to flip the tiny switch inside the black cover of the connector from E to C. (It comes set to E)

Set the Car information using Traqview or TraqStudio to CYLINDERS = 1.

Fire up the car and check the RPM in the lower left corner of the Other Features / Check Inputs screen. It should match the factory tach.

With the help of "Rob in VA" I was able to obtain the RPM input from my 997 GT3 RS.

E6 wire from the DME (green cable with blue trace on the first socket). Get a traqdata sensor from Traqmate, tap the E6 wire to the sensor.

I got the 12v and ground out of the power outlet in the center console. You can place the sensor unit in the center console, or the middle of the two aluminum panels (right below the carpet panel with the GT3 logo). I left my traqmate connected permanently in the RS, so I only needed to place the display unit on the dashboard and connect just one cable.

I mounted the gps antenna permanently using double side tape and placing it at the top of the rear window (inside).

I did a permanent mount of my Traqmate underneath the passenger seat. Power to an unused switched fuse in driver's footwell. I wired the GPS antenna under the carpet out the rear and stuck to the body just forward the rear wing. You can see the antenna in this pic. I'm very happy with the results.

Big Thanks

To everybody! This info was fantastic. The info below was right on the money.

Set the Car information using Traqview or TraqStudio to CYLINDERS = 1.

The only thing I would add is that this Connector E is the connector closest to the passenger side of the car. You do not need to remove the aluminum cover, but can just pull the connector out of its socket. I would advise doing this with the ignition and maybe the batter completely off. I did not disconnect the battery and had no problems.

Hope this info helps others. I know it helped me and once again thank my fellow Rennlisters

I'll get pics when I get my settup reconfigured. I am currently going to switch out my Traqmate between 2 different cars and need to move it from under the passengers seat to a more accessible spot.

FWIW, you can also get throttle position from DME IV at 13 [D13] and get a binary brake signal from the light while you are back there. IMO, throttle position is more helpful than RPM, but both are really nice. I've been meaning to do a write up from my install, but it takes longer than the actual install I use Racelogic products, but it's the same steps.

My "trick" was to get some 18 awg 4 conductor security cable and tap D6 and E13 at the same time using 18 awg 3M taps [18 awg are light blue]. This left me 2 free conductors for later use. I also looped an extra foot of wire at the DME as well as under my passenger seat for future applications. I put some zip ties on the DME wire bundle to keep the taps from pulling free.

Is this still the best option?

It worked fine for me. Also recommended, read the excellent ECU removal guide from our friends at Sharkwerks. Pictures and details on everything you need to know to get to the ECU.
