wondering if all the TC and pasm can be turned off in the 997.1 gt3? i read that the 997.2 can...thinking about upgrading to gt3 and read that 996gt3 without electronics make it more of a driving experience..anyone track with TC and pasm off in the 997 gt3 and does this make it closer to a 996 gt3 experience..i track a fair bit and gt3 is in my future..wondering if the 997 gt3 guys could chime in ..thanks

trust me, the 7 is the better car, better experience.
as far as electronic nannies are concerned.... there are none.
if you induced them, you most likely would have crashed either 6 or the 7 GT3.
yes, i have more than 10,000 track miles on each of those platforms.

997 is by far superior of the 996 in all categories..however, in my opinion, the 996 is harder to drive at
8/10th's, 9/10th's than the 997 due to it's "personality" that the 997 fixed.....it made it more fun for me in the 996.

^ i agree.
but try 9.5/10 or 10/10 in the 996, it will feel more stable than at 8/10. strange i know. took me a long time to figure that out. when i ***** foot the 996, i go wide, off, or backwards. when i whipped it, it just does its business.
the 7 feels more stable to me, but it really isn't more stable. just feels that way (to me). i also throw the 6 around more and try to get it back in line. it's very hard to throw the 7 around. when you really throw it, you may be in the dirt ;-)

PASM= Porsche Active Suspension Management
If the 997 GT3 doesn't have it, what are those little buttons on the left side of the center console?
IMO, having driven, but not owned the 997 version, PASM is like having two sets of shocks switchable with the push of a button.
They are both wonderfully capable track cars and while I love my 996, I'd trade it in a heartbeat for a 997.
I don't entirely agree w/Mooty. The 997 TC MAY save you from some situations where the 996 would not. I spun my 996 on Saturday in a situation where the 997 (if TC was on) would have, IMO, prevented the spin.

^ yes, you are right, 7 has PASM (hate these shorthands) hard to decipher.
I always turn the TC off on 7. I don’t go off much, when I go, I go BIG. So TC never happed me.

997 is easier to drive fast. TC doesn't save the 997.1 GT3 at all, unless you're driving in low grip conditions, it is almost impossible to invoke TC on a hot dry lap.
997.2 has PSM and PASM, 997.1 only PASM (electronic suspension).
I spun my 996 GT3 more often than the 997 GT3 RS, and spun the 997.1 RS more than the Boxster/Cayman/Scuderia together.
996 feels very agile and and light, 997 feels heavy.
997 sounds so good, 996 not so much (unless you're outside).
Lap times: about the same when driven at 10/10th.

the 996 gt3 is much better bang for your buck in terms of track usage, but other than that the 997 is superior as it should be- it's developed off of a newer chassis. compared to normal 911s they're all going to feel super stiff, and to the layman the only real difference is the skittish nature of the 996's steering and a bit less hp.
once like DRG and Mooty said- you start driving towards the upper limits of the car- $hit goes down real quick in either as you can reach lap times within a few seconds of a same vintage cup car (ie at Laguna 997 cup car on a 2.24 mile track that can do 1:30ish, the 997 GT3 will be 1:39 stock, 996 gt3 1:40.5 stock)
TC WILL NOT save you from spinning off the track unless you're wooding the throttle in a low gear and are power oversteering/drifting which in that case all it would do is make you take more of a straight tangent off the track nose first.
I personally like the 997's steering and driving on the street much better than the 996. on the track they're both super flexible as it all comes down to how you set the car up.
and that is the best part of the gt3 in either guise- it's super adjustable. ride height, alignment, sway bars, there is a lot of stuff to play with!

The 996 GT3 doesn't have either.
The 997.2 GT3 has both.

PASM
Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), an electronic damper adjustment system, is fitted as standard on the 911 GT3. PASM actively and continuously controls the individual damping forces for each wheel according to current road conditions and driving style. The 911 GT3 is also 1.2 inches (30 mm) lower than the standard 911 Carrera.
At the press of a button, the driver can choose between two setup modes. ‘Normal’ mode is designed for sporty driving on general roads and on the racetrack in wet conditions. ‘Sport’ mode is especially for maximum lateral acceleration and the best possible traction on the racetrack.
PSM
To contribute towards safety and driving stability within the dynamic range, the new GT3 is fitted for the first time with Porsche Stability Management (PSM). In addition to the anti-lock braking system (ABS), it includes two automatic control systems: Stability Control (SC) and Traction Control (TC).
Stability Control (SC) stabilizes the lateral dynamics using sensors which constantly monitor the vehicle’s speed, yaw velocity and lateral acceleration. From this information it is possible to calculate the actual direction of travel. If the vehicle deviates from its course, Stability Control (SC) initiates selective braking on individual wheels to help stabilize the vehicle within the limits of its driving dynamics.

I drive with TC off and PASM set to sport unless the track is wet. The adjustable suspension is the best feature of the 997GT3/RS compared to the 996 GT3.
TC is always set to off in my car, same as the AC. On my home track TC does intervene needlessly on some corners when driving on R compounds at speed. So, I turn it off.
The 997 is more versatile than the 6 but at a price.

When I leave the house: TC off, PASM=sport, exhaust=sport. With that the rear will break loose a little like the 996 GT3. It makes it perfect for me. I like to be able to soften it up for my wife or a very bumpy wet track. I am glad it does not have the Please Save Me

while there is officially fully defeatable TC and no PSM on the 997 GT3 mk1, there are quite a few anecdotal reports of premature rear brake pad wear/boil over that make me suspect that it is not fully defeatable. Just my suspicion.
