I'm always reading about how Porsche racers are doing this and that to improve their cars, and wondered how many use a HANS device as part of their race equipment? I have a buddy who's been racing longer than most of you have been alive, and he adopted one many years ago.

HANS, ISAAC, Hutchens, R3, Leatt, Wright, Defender...almost all of the commercially available H&N restraints (and SFI 38.1) have been discussed numerous times in the Racing/DE forum.
Caution:
H&N restraint discussions can be similar to oil viscosity discussions.
I would recommend a search or post in the Raing/DE forum...tremendous amount of experience with these devices in there.

Got one three years ago just for DE. Would feel really naked going out on the track without it. It is sort of like wearing a helmet to ski. The first day is a little awkward and after that it seems natural.

Recently bought a HNR, and won't get in another car with harnesses and a roll bar/cage without it.
My research steered me toward the DefNder. The $150 savings wasn't enough to steer me away from a HANS, but the adaptability (against HANS, which requires two devices if ever you want to drive a Formula car), shoulder comfort (even on the first time out, I didn't mind wearing it, at all), ability to turn my head (see previous parenthesis), and added lateral stability/protection. That said, there are a lot of people really into HANS, and I can easily see why.
I am not, however, so sure I would wear a HNR in a car with harnesses but no cage or roll bar. More than one safety expert I've talked to has questioned the wisdom of making sure your head and neck will stay upright if the top of the car can come down (or up, I suppose) on you...
Then there are all those cars without even harnesses, in which case both the HANS and the DefNder are useless.
