If you're correct, it would be shameful, IMHO.

I believe the official time was 7.47 with standard MPSC tyres but had achieved a 7.38 on slicks...

This new car achieved a 7.40 (with MPSC) on an open day with some track traffic and they said it was good for another 2-3 sec in the hands of Walter on a clean run...

I think it was more like 7:43.

Anyway, don't forget the mk2 has far more downforce and also new front uprights. If these are retrofitted to the mk1, it'll do the same lap-time.

The only snag is that together the engine lid and rear spoiler blade cost about €7,000 euros. Ouch. But front bumper and front uprights don't cost much though.

7:42 or 7:43, you are right !

It means the new car is about 2 or 3 seconds faster only

If you retrofit the same aero package to the current gt3, it will actually go slower due to the increased drag. They used the increased torque and power of the new motor to offset the inherit drag... otherwise there would have been a larger increase in 0-400m and terminal speeds recorded.

2-3 seconds on the ring is just over 0.6% of the total lap time. granted amongst the absolute most closely skilled drivers that would be a reasonable margin but the laps are almost 8 minutes long.

The increased drag is only 0.02CD. It will only affect at very high speeds on the long straights, not at lower speeds i.e. through corners or short straights. In fact, through corners it'll be faster.

So why do we ask for more power then???

I'm no race engineer but if they have made up 2-3 seconds on a 20km+ lap with that many high speed sections, they didn't make it up through the corners... I think 20bhp and increased torque played a greater role than added down force in such a small overall gain... Pulling out of corners and higher speeds on the straights would play a big part...

To summarize the above discussion (if the data is true, I haven't checked):

The old one on MPSCs did around 7:43.

The new one did 7:40, but had traffic. So it's probably 5-6 seconds faster on a clean run. Makes sense if you ask me, the 996 could do 7:49 on cups (not n-spec), so the delta is similar.

Sure the new one has better aero and better handling, but on a course like the ring, power is going to be a big factor, it's got to be half that 5-6 seconds. I remember reading an old article about the 996 GT2. The journalist I suppose was trying to show he knew that many factors could contribute to the lap time (which is true) and asked about pccb and the time delta between the GT2 and the GT3 (before the GT3 got ceramics). Walter of course reminded him of the 90 hp...

The 2004 GT3 RS did it in 7:43 with MPSC. The 2007 997 GT3 and RS ran 7:42. The new one at 7:40 sounds about right.

The 997 GT2 ran it in 7:32 and the GT2 is a much faster track car than any old or new version of a GT3, considering that it has wider tires, another 95 Hp compared to the new GT3 and torque everywhere as long as the car stays above 3,000 rpm.
