Mine just did it today. If i start the car to move it in my garage it may do it. As craig mentioned it's very common.

I have had both the 996 and 997 Versions of this wonderful car. BOTH had smoke on startup AFTER
LONG sitting periods. Never had a problem with either car. I think this is completely normal.
Wether it comes from the top or the bottom is going to be hard to see. I believe it comes from the
exhaust. However when looking back after starting the car, the smoke appears to come from the top
as it floats up from the exhaust. You would think the smoke is coming from the top if one didnt know better.

+1, both my 996C4 and 997S have been known, on occasion, to cough out some white fur *****. The first time it happened I panicked thinking it was something serious.

Do you mean "when I first start it"?

This is a characteristic of Porsche flat sixes. It has happened with my '71 911E, my '88 Carreera and my '07 GT3. Not to worry!
