Default Toyo R888 Sizing Question for 997 GT3

Have so many options... First desire is 245/305 RA1s because they worked so well on my 997S. But, before I pull the Hoosiers off the Fikse Profil 13s I picked up, I thought I'd ask around to see what people really like on the GT3.

When I read posts on the R888 I hear good and bad, but maybe some of the bad is made up by tire width. That is assuming you can get enough heat into a wider tire.

Tire size, tread width, diameter, rim range

245, 9.8", 25.7", 8-8.5-9.5
255, 10.1", 25.1", 8.5-9-10
265, 10.6", 25.4", 9-9.5-10.5

305, 12.1", 26.3", 10-11-12
315, 12.5", 25.5", 10.5-11-11.5
335, 13.4", 26", 11.5-12-12.5

265/335 sounds nice, but not sure they would fit without rubbing. My wheels are: Fikse Profil 13 in 18x9 front et 51, and 18x12 rear et 64. I read one post of a forumite that ran 255/315 without trouble...

Thanks in advance!

Can't speak for the R888's but they are a fairly square tire and 235x35x19 hoosier R6's are too and they scrape something on the inside of the arm (plastic sounding) at full lock (only matters in the parking lot, i never experience it on the track) but they also scrape the top of the fender coming down from the bank off an oval at one track.

I don't think you can go 265, maybe with a tricky offset though.

I run the 255/315 combo and they fit/work great. I can turn a good pace lap after lap with no degradation on either end of the car. If you are using it for auto-x, you will have trouble getting the tires up to their ideal temp range.

When the tires are new, you'll feel a bit of swinging side to side under heavy braking from high speeds. I have a video somewhere online where I'm coming into the braking zone at Mosport's straight @ 240km/h and the car swings enough that I need to countersteer to keep things under control.

If you came from a 993 Turbo, the swinging won't bother you because that car did it under any tire condition. Once the R888's wear in a bit, it becomes much more stable.

my set lasted 6 days of track duty. they became ice blocks on the 7th day very quickly. I heat cycled them myself gently but did use them throughout their first weekend. I think the R888's are much more sensitive to proper heat cycling as in warm them up to temp on the first session then remove from the car and let cure for several days. They are entirely more tempermental than the RA-1's were. just my 1.5 cents.

Ron, I used the 255/315 R888 combo on my 997S with out any issues. Since the side wall was shorter I found I liked the steering and cornering feel better than the taller 245/305 combo I had with my RA1's.
These were mounted on CCW C14's 9x18 and 12x18.

This is what I see most guys I DE with use for there GT3's some even use a 265 front with the 9x18 wheel. It is better to stretch the tire sidewall a little I'm told to help keep side wall flex/wiggle down.

You bring up an interesting point, Some people have told me that the R888 does not need to be heat cycled, or said another way it does not benefit the tire the way it does and is recommended for the R6 for example. I have looked at all the tech data I can find on the R888 and have not found anything that the mfg recommends heat cycling.

As a comparison, I do not run the sport cups do they recommend Heat cycling for the Cups?

255/315 perfect setup, I wouldn't go 40 profile sidewall though , on my GT2 I have the 255/335's, 335's are immense but I really needed the extra grip, I think I can get away with 315 and save some weight as well..

I just wish the front turn in was a little better and my suspension is nicely dialed in, the sidewall is just a little numb sometimes!

Ditto the 255/315 - only have 2 track days ~ 8 cycles on them so I can't comment on them turning to ice! So far they are very predictable and grip well

the "bad" of R888 is not due to sizing
i ran 245/305 as well as 255/315 on 9" and 12" CCW's. the general behavior is the same regardless of sizes. i find the grip better and i am faster with 255/315.

I'm running 265/325 MPSC everyday, and just got 265/345 A6. 265 on 9" fit the stock car with the tops rotated, no rubbing.

345 doesn't fit the RS, at least the monster A6 that was designed with the Viper in mind. The things are (I measured them) 14.3" wide, that's like a 365mm tire, that simple.

I run Toyo R888's 245 front and 305 rear. I bought them used, used at an autocross one day and I now have 8! track days on them. The rears are slick in the middle but still some grooves on the outside, starting to get less grip now. The fronts are fine still. Maybe they are lasting this long because they were heatcycled gently at an auto cross and than sat for a while before I got them?

Just to see how far the tires, rotors and pads will go, I will go to Sebring the 13th for 1 day and the 14th to PBIR, new track, very slick, so we will see what they'll do there and I will have 10 days on them and that should kill the first set of rear tires and the Pagid R29 pads (6 days and about 1/3rd left now) I think. Most of them at Sebring, pretty rough on brakes and tires, so that should be a good indicator of things to come..

So far I am impressed with how everything lasts on the car, even the front rotors are still usable with the cracks not linking to the holes too much and no cracks extending to the edge of the rotor.

I was very happy with the R888's right until the point they dropped dead and it was a steep slope. they still have noticeable tread on the rears. I did drive them at buttonwillow in the summer with track temp of 130 degrees on more than one occasion and i think the big temperature swing may have contributed to their early demise. the day they did die it was low 70's and at an autocross although it was a very fast autox. 1.25 mile long course with speed up to 90mph nearly continuous laps. first few sessions they were normal, then the car had some great oversteer on throttle to finally in the afternoon when i couldn't get the rear end to plant for crap. felt like a dodge viper on street rubber. fun at autox, but probably not so thrilling at a big track. I went back to my RA-1's and they are good for another weekend or two. after that, i'm on to Hoosiers since I can trailer the car anyways and they are cheaper than R888's.
