Default 996 GT3 vs 997 GT3 major differences?

Hi..

Is anyone able to summarize the major differences/pros/cons between the following -

996 GT3
996 GT3RS
997 GT3
997 GT3RS

I currently have a 964 turbo and have been thinking about adding a GT3 to the lineup. Have read through a number of reviews and posts, but thought ppl who actually own one would provide the best insight.

Thanks
Matt

As far as I know, the 997 has about 35 more hp, redline 8400 instead of 8200, has sunroof, traction control, PASM plus general differences between 996 and 997. I think the 996 is more of a pure GT3 without any driver aids. The 997 handles better, is less twitchy, probably a little heavier but not by much. Both great cars.

Riz summarized it pretty well as I had both the 996 and 997. The 996 was more twitchy and followed grooves on hiways. The sound on the 997 was as good as I have ever heard from GT3. Really now at these prices, either one would do. Depends on your purpose. Track mostly 996. Track and street then i would get a 997.

i dont have 996RS. but i have the rest of your list, combined mileage > 120,000 miles.

those who says 996 is more of driver's car... well that's not correct, that's like saying full rigid bike is a better bike than suspended rigs.

if you spin one car, you will spin the other.

there is no driver's aid on 997, the TC can be turned off. if you invoke it a lot, you really can't drive anyways. so no matter which car you have, it wont make any difference.

997 is faster than 996 period. it's much more stable. slightly more tq, more top end.

996 is a lot more bang for the buck. money no object, i question the logic of those who tout 996 over 997. if you factor in economics 996 wins hands down.

996 feels lighter and livelier.

stock to stock 7RS pushes while 7gt3 feels more lively and neutral. but you can make both neutral.

RS has some small suspension advantages and wider track., but i think those nuiances are very small and probably only perceivable by professionals. i certainly can't tell huge difference.

if you have more specific Q, i be happy to help.

the stock suspension on the 7 is much better both on track and street.

The obvious difference is price; the 996 GT3 is a bargain compared to the 997...... 99% of the performance for maybe 60% of the cost.

I've read a few articles that name the 996 GT3 as a "Top Ten supercars of Last Decade – Porsche 996 GT3" due to its purity:

I have a 94 page Porsche document that outlines the differences between the 996 GT3 and the 997 GT3. It's called 997_GT3_Productinfo.pdf which I believe was given to dealers to help their salespeople understand what the 997 GT3 is all about and the differences to the previous generation. PM me your email address and I'll send it your way.

Nice gesture but with all due respect the actual driving experience of all these cars is the best way to appreciate the differences in them all. Books/salespeople/owners on forums etc just can't do that but I realize test driving them all is sometimes imposssibe too depending where you live.

My 2¢: The 996 is a fantastic and really fun "super" track / road sports car.

I think the 996 was more a track car for the road.

But the 997.1 GT3 IMO is the best one of them all since the road use is also fantastic.

The 997.2 GT3 is great, but not as fun as the 997.1. My humble opinion.

996 gt3- perfect imperfection. 997 they improved on the suspension geometry to make it well planted on the track. Don't care much about exterior/interior differences. 997 is faster on track but hella more fun with the 6. Have no sensation of speed or fear of my life driving a 997. Mike

You are a substantially better driver than I am because on track in my head I'm driving like vettel and frequently scare myself.
