My neighbor used to be a Navy pilot, he retired and now is a Contractor for the Navy. I drive by his house all the time. He has been working on a 914 conversion to a subaru motor for 4 years. I go by Suday and there is a 996 in his garage. So I stop by. DOOD what are you doin?? He bought a 99 996 in Vegas with a motor problem for $10K. He brought it home ordered a crate motor from Suncoast for 8K and tada!!! put it in himself!! in 2 weekends!! He Still hasnt finished the 914 but he put together a modern 911 in 4 days! Downloaded the manuals and no help. The thing sounds great has new brakes and new Kenisis wheels (on the car when he bought it) and has a really nice rig for $18K. Most Navy Aviators (excuse me their not pilots) have a hard time zipping up their flight suits and this guy
r & r's a 911 motor!!! Kudos to him and now its got me thinking about a cheap 2nd car. For that much I would consider a wet sump motor.
I was thinking of a 914 restoration for a driver; a track car what ever. And I was budgeting around 5K for the car and 10 for all the other stuff but this has me thinking for a VERY nice driver or track car for NOT a whole lot of money.
I am amazed by his mechanical skills and if he can do that I would trust him pulling my GT3 tranny and doing a LWFW change. Remember the GT3 motor and tranny are made to quickly come out at the track for what ever reason.
Gear set swap or what ever. So I bet he would have no problem with this.
