Crank pulley coming loose on GT3's.....

Who is the technician, and what is the source/level of his expertise? I'm surprised that this information is just now surfacing, but if I were considering this option I'd want to be thorough in my analysis.
Enquiring minds want to know and you have the opportunity to bring a lot of value to the readers, if you can substantiate your post.

I had the accessory drive belt tensioner pulley replaced recently on my 996GT3. It had started to make a noise like a wheel bearing going out and Kent Moore in Las Vegas picked up right away what was causing the noise. I got it replaced before it failed. I am not sure it is the same as the 997 but the part number was 996.115.016.72. Mine does not have any #2 overevs.

Looks like this topic is the proverbial "hot potato" and nobody wants to provide (or knows) the conclusive answer, or insight into the problem.
Makes me think that no one really knows or wants to go out on a limb. If that is truly the case Porsche Engineering wins!
This topic needs more discussion and insight by the experts to provide valuable guidance.
Does a GT3 LWFW need a pulley replacement, and is the pulley a potential grenade in the GT3/RS.
Is the pulley different in the GT3 versus the GT3RS?
Is there something a GT3/RS owner should do to avoid a disaster?

My friend has been running his '00 996 GT3 Clubsport, with stock factory lwfw, and he never experienced any problems with it. It was standard equiptment at the time.
Is there a difference between the software in the RS and the GT3? Maybe something to do with the lwfw and how the engine needs to cope with it.

Looking to accumulate data on this issue.... I've personally witnessed 4 GT3's suffer a crank pulley failure at track events -- the locking pin breaks and the nut securing the pulley comes loose. Pulley comes off, no water pump, power steering etc.. As a side note, all of these GT3's have had the LWF installed.
Anyone else seen or heard of this issue?

Hey Jack, Yea, mine seized up after my last day at Buttonwillow with you guys. Power steering went out on the way down Kanan; luckily it did not happen somewhere on Grapevine or some such place. Limped home and had her flatbedded off to Mike the next day. He took care of it, says its all correct now. As you know, I have the LWFW.

suncoast reported the part numbers are different for the pulley between RS and GT3. I asked for them to provide it. Part is about $85 so cheap enough insurance to just order one which I did. I'll post part numbers when I get them. I'll try to take some pictures as well.

the part numbers for the pulley are:
K99610201793 for the GT3
K99610201795 (F004) for the RS
You'll also need these if you're doing an RS one:
993 102 550 80 (bolt - M14 x 1.5 x 40)
999 025 174 02 (washer - yes it's really a different part number).
It's easy to change while you're there and others have reported on a TSB for retourquing (Snowboarder) the bolt.
Weird thing is I've seen the lower one on newer GT3s. So maybe Porsche started to use those. Then again I've seen a Tiptronic steering wheel in a GT3 before too
As Colm said tho.. we know of one case on the GT3RS as well (on the East Coast). I don't know if it was over-revved as I didn't see the ECU.

it's easy to hit the redline w the lwfw but how many of us can deny hitting it at one maybe twice in a lifetime???
the 997 gt3 generates this problem when you do when heavily loaded,
and it leaks oil now in 3 places i find:
-RMS
-platform seals
-pulley crankshaft
other than these problems it's terrific
such a great design breakthrough
