Default LWFW

I have searched the forum and have found very little to help me decide whether to change to a LWFW. I have found that the car is a little sluggish below 4,000 RPM. I am late to this game, but have had 5 DE Events and would appreciate advice and observations on the difference it would make. Also, a guess at what the cost should be.

There is absolutely no downside to the LWFW other than a rattle at idle. It significantly improves throttle response in the lower gears and makes blipping the throttle on downshifts feel like you're blipping a motorcycle engine. The only thing that confounds me is why it's not standard on all GT3s.

Not sure what it costs, but it can't be too expensive and it's worth every penny.

Just my opinion of course, but I think it's that good.

hey normank, I would go for it... The small amount of transmission noise is the _only_ down side. It's not anymore difficult to drive or pull away from 1st gear. The revs drop, climb a considerably quicker and then there's the rev-matching....

Alex,
Would you give me an idea of what I should expect to pay for the job? And, how long does it take to do?

The best time to do it is when the car has the gearbox out for a clutch service. Then you usually don't have to pay the additional labor for that process, only swapping out the flywheel and the parts.

Hey, normank,

Do a search on the 996 GT3 board to see the results I and others posted after fitting the LWFW to the '04. I expect the results to be the same.

1. Better throttle response, faster AutoX runs
2. Eliminated the 'sticky clutch ' syndrome. (Caveat: I also installed the 3.8 RSR Clutch, available from Porsche Motorsports)
3. My GT3 was MUCH easier to drive in traffic.

Hey Norman, I don't have that stuff in front of me but I know the entire clutck kit, including the flywheel, release bearing, pressure plate etc.. is around the 2K mark. Takes around 11-ish.

Could you further describe the 'sticky clutch' syndrome? TIA

I had a GT3 and have driven a GT3RS a few times. I think the LWFW is a great upgrade to the GT3...only downside as previously stated is the chatter at idle(reminds me of the old days when I owned Ducatis).

The "hard core" guys count the chatter as a benefit.

Does anyone know if installing a LWFW will void the warranty?
Disregard: Porsche confirms this is NOT the case.

On a less bright note, the cost is about $6k. Does that sound high?

agreed. parts for me were about $1800 US, labour is large but perhaps you can tie it in to oil leak repairs

Hi Norman,

The parts are around 1800-2050 (depending on what you choose to buy) and figure about $1375-1500 to do the labor so NOT 6k As far as it voiding the warranty it's obviously a grey area although one of my local dealerships bought the parts from me (LOL!) and then did the install. I know many dealerships are doing it.... so it's not just us guys.
