smoke on start up
#16
I rarely get white smoke, but when it happens, it is a allot.
I always get a 2 or 3 second 'grinding' sound when my engine is completely cold. It started at 5k miles
Porsche service tells me its totally normally

I was told by a mechanic friend that your new 911 engine will smoke/or not depending on how the engine builder arranged the gaps in the piston rings, if the gaps are aligned to the bottom of the engine expect smoke on startup. This probably explains why only one side may smoke; and if all six are aligned down, big puff.

Got mine from the dealer today. Said that the "new car" oil is possibly a little on the thin side and while sitting for a period of time, could get into the fuel. Subsequently, it burns off in the first few seconds of starting up on a cold start. I changed my oil (1350 miles) and it we'll see how it does. Also, the rattle is normal with the single mass flywheel, I'm told.

I think the rattle everyone is talking about is an engine rattle, and NOT a flywheel rattle. My 996GT3 always "rattled" hard, like metal on metal when starting the car after sitting for more than a week - the Rs does the same.

white smoke maybe 1 start in 5, 2 seconds of mechanical rattle (more sort of heavy vibration) about 1 start in 2. Totally unnsuccsessful so far in working out when either does or doesn't.... At one time i thought the rattle was when foot came of the clutch after starting but i was wrong. If I leave foot on clutch then sometimes rattle happens anyway.

smoke on startup
Hi All,
I have had my GT3 for about 2 weeks and it has about 1050 miles now. For the first time today I saw some smoke on startup. Just my experience to be added to the discussion. I will keep an eye for it in the future and see if it continues. I have been gentle on the engine as the manual suggests. I have been told by many (most - including the dealers) that it is okay to "drive normally" during the break-in period and that exceeding the 4200 RPM recommendation is not a problem as long as you are not "flogging" the motor.

Well it never happened this weekend. I only had dark colored smoke that one day that I posted this topic. By reading all your replies I am guessing my engine is normal and just breaking in

Yep, got smoke on rare occasions in the morning. I just pretend I'm driving a Trabant back in the DDR....lol.
Only lasts for a few seconds, but sort of alarming the first time it happened.
