Default WARNING FOR PCCB OWNERS !!!!

Guys,

I experienced a serious problem with my PCCB's while at a trackday at Spa this week..

Sorry if i don't use the correct tech terms, as i'm no mechanic...

2 of the bolts that hold the ceramic rotors to the bells on one of my front discs worked loose..

I started getting a tapping noise early in the day, and it was at it's worst on slow speed corners when the front was loaded heavily going into a bend.

it got slightly worse during the day, and so i eventually asked a Porsche specialist guy with us to come for a ride to try and pin point it...

The noise was at its worst when he came in the car, and we came in after 2 laps, to try and find it.
Although i had looked at the brakes most of the day to try and see something, he noticed straight away, that 2 of the bolts on the bells, were not pushed through as much as the rest of them (they are screwed in from the inside of the disc).

We took the wheel, caliper and disc off, and found that 2 of these bolts had come undone by about 2mm each, and had started rubbing on the hub, which has left the hub with a couple of deep gouges.

The heads of the bolts were pretty Fu**ed, and they were also bent, but we managed to straighten them and get screw them back in tight.
All the other bolts were loose enough to tigthen with a hand tool also.

Obviously i am very concerned, and will be onto Porsche HO on Monday.

This specialist said that the bolts on the previous gen pccbs's were held in with something called 'locktight' ? which prevents bolts working loose, onbviously there was none on my brakes, and the others may well have worked loose over time too...

Anyway, i suggest you check yours, or even take it up with your dealer, i would be very surprised if there isn't a recall for this at some point ????

The Good news is that i have done 11 hard days, and 30 laps of the Ring, and the discs still look like new The RS29's work great with them, bit noisey, but worth it...

Also, i know of 2 RS's that have had their clutch assemblies (or something similar, sorry can't remember exact term they used) cracked and failed, one happened on track this week....this sounds a bit too coincidentle to me

You weren't going along the M4 this afternoon towards Reading at about 1:30pm were you?

If so I spotted you going the other way!

Just heard from Porsche, and have been told that they will be replacing the front NS hub, and the front discs and pads, so they are not messing about with this...

I think they have taken this very seriously tbh, but hopefully it is an isolated case..

That was a result, getting a new set of discs out of them! Unfortunately that will mean it takes a little longer for us to hear how many trackdays a set of PCCBs last. Still difficult to decide on the economics of PCCB vs steel...

Seriously, they still looked like new, it's nice to know i'm getting a new set, but i almost wish the last ones were worn, but they weren't.

I am very carefull to make sure i do at least 1 full cool down lap after each session, this may or may not help, but i stick to it anyway.

I really do think these are worth the money now, and they will last a long time...

Really surprised your bolts undid. They only need torquing up hand tight anyway - think its 20Nm off the top of my head. I had to assemble the rotors onto the hats when swapping out the PCCB rotor on my 996 RS. Can't remember if I used threadlock or not, probably did, but the heat is so intense back there and the fittings get bent by the rotational forces that you are very unlucky to have had these come loose. I broke 3 screwdrivers undoing the original fixings which had done about 6 trackdays and 8k road miles.

Dan,

No idea where you got the torque ratings from then, as Porsche UK told me Germany will not give out that info, and this is why any PCCB replacment is a straight swap as even though you are only paying for the rotors, they take your old bells off you, and give you another complete set of disc/rotor that are pre-torqued from factory...
