Default RS Chin Spoiler--Unavoidable Damage: Can it be repaired?

Guys,
I now have road rash on the corner of my plastic spoiler, despite my continuing best efforts. Although I have tried (am trying) to think of the part as disposable (and how much do they cost, anyway?), does anyone have any experience in repairing it? Would it be possible to sand away the rough spot? Has anyone ever done this? Does it cause the part to be discolored where it is sanded?
Any thoughts or experience people would be prepared to share would be appreciated.
Regards,
Ray

A good way to get rid of the "road rash" is to take a razor blade and gently trim away the "rash" -- yes, the spoiler is definitely a disposable item -- the two parts (i.e., lip and extension) cost about $100 each, so not too bad -- but see my other post here re the question re the lip.

ray, isnt the cgt lower?
seems like you would be used to front cowl scrape from driving the cgt.
i scraped my 996gt3 front cowl every day i drove the car.
popped it lose a lot as well. just had to reconnect.
you'll drive yourself crazy trying to keep the front cowl looking perferct.
or you'll quit driving the car . . . and that wouldnt be any fun!
hope you had a nice holiday!

I've heard of some people who mask off the paintwork with a piece of cardboard and after deburring the spoiler, hit it with some black spray paint. Looks better than rashed up spoiler and keeps it looking a bit better until damage forces replacement.

Just buy a 6 pack of lip spoilers, they are disposable items if you daily drive your GT3.

Mine is due for a replacement, again.

Yea, you can sand the lower edge to get the burrs off. If it's really bashed up there isn't much you can do except replace. BTW, it doesn't make a lot of sense to replace until it gets really thrashed.

So should we have a "Go to din ner" spoiler and a "Go to the track" Spoiler?

I've already got both replacement pieces stowed in the garage. Can't imagine trying to find them 10 years from now. It's a wise investment. Mine were around 250 for both pieces.

Steel wool works great.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'lll try 'em.
And. of course, it's comforting to know you can replace the whole kit and kaboodle for a modest price.
Thanks agaain,

Ray

Jeff,
The spoiler on the CGT and the RS are about the same, but at this point, I've got more seat time in the RS than the CGT, despite the fact that I've had the CGT for two years (my bad), so I've had more chances to damage the RS spoiler than the CGT's.

By the way, the Ausust '07 issue of Excellence has a great story on three 356's that have won the Grand Prize for Restoration at the Porsche Parade ('97 San Antonio Parade:'55 Speedster, '03 Tampa Parade: '64 Carrera 2 Coupe, '06 Portland Parade: '63 Twin Grille Roadster). The Speedster also won the Honorary Judges' Trophy at the 50th Parade in '05 at Hershey awarded by the Porsche family, Jerry Seinfeld, Peter Schwartzenbauer and other luminaries. The cars are owned by a fellow Rennlister I am very close to, whose friends think he is a great guy and whose wife thinks he is an idiot. I think you'll enjoy the story.

And Jeff, we need a new avatar (you've always got the best ones, except when you are featuring Jack!)

All the best,
Ray

The wheels are closer to the corners in the CGT, so lip risk is greater in the RS because of overhang.

I have a big fat oversized permanent magic market I use between service visits. There's no way to get around the rash, I just replace it when I get service done.

That's a great idea.
