Probably the baffles were not secured well enough during manufacture. The increased exhaust pressure may have caused them to fail sooner then they would have otherwise.

The catalytic converters have a honey comb ceramic piece in it. When it goes it rattles around becuase of the broken pieces. That is wierd that the mufflers would start rattling I would think they are more free flowing then the cats.

I disconnected mine too. The first start up had a bit of rattling from the exhaust but that seems to have gone away. There is resonance between 2500 and 3000 RPMs at certain throttle positions. But it does sound better overall.

I wish the sport button did the bypass at all RPMs. There are times that I like to be in stealth mode. Its easy enough to reconnect.

I wonder if there is a "reprogramming possibility" to get the sport button to do the bypass at all RPMs?

beside the LOUDNESS, i think sport button also make TC allow bigger slip angle and we get a tad more torque?

IF that is correct, and we disconnect the wire to the bypass to have loud all the time. i presume we still need to depress the sport button to get the tq and lessen the effect of TC?

Yes with regards to the Traction Control, but not the power increase, which is a product of the exhaust valve opening!

I tried the disconnect - too boomy around town. And its more difficult to hear the fan noise, which reminds me of the air-cooled Porsches of the past. I'll try the disconnect on the track, but I like the unmodified sport setting around town.

Wasn't there a TSB concerning muffler baffles on the 997? I had an '05 997S and it was real rattly at first, especially upon startup. When I took it in for my first dealer service they did a few recalls and the noise went away.

Porsche sent out a letter about defective mufflers. The welds would go bad. I know, I had to replace three exhaust systems before we got one that worked right.

I read on another forum that some people are hardwiring a defeat switch to their exhaust so that it is more like the 996 switch, This way you would have a switch for the muffler and keep the switch for the TC. Anybody try this yet?
PSE switch mod discussion
(Beware it is a little more involved than pulling a plug)
