I think the environment in the shipping container (on the vessel coming across the pond) isn't humidity, temperature or salinity controlled. My understanding is that the Cosmoline simply prevents corrosion during this shipping process. Perhaps someone closer to the process (of overseas shipping) would care to comment.

Cosmoline looks like crap but 10-15 years from now when there is not even a hint of corrosion on anything it touches you'll be happy that Porsche used it. The best thing to do is to pretend it doesn't exist. Otherwise once you start scraping you won't be able to stop until it is all gone.
