I didn't think you could retract a bid. I've been using Ebay for a while and every time I place a bid, I get a warning page that the bid is a contract to buy.

You could certainly be correct about that. It's interesting that the only bids are these Bidder "XX" types. I've seen them on the photo and vintage musical instrument items too so I'm not sure what's up with it. If I had more time I'd go to the eBay cchat rooms and get the story but whatever.

From the looks of the sellers cancellation however either he sold it to a blow-out bid or he's wolfing.

Since you don't have to post your userID in these new types of auctions where is just states "Bidder#" then you can easily have your friends bid to bring the price up and then have them retract their bid and thus keep the bid numbers high and take your friend off the hook especially if they are the high bidder.

Bidder XX are a new Ebay protection feature. It hides the actual identity of the bidders. automatically assigned by Ebay sequentially on high dollar ammount items. no scam in that respect.
