Default GT3RS -> GT3 - Made the Switch Wooohooo!

After figuring out the final price on my theoretical RS (#3 on the list with a dealer that is getting 2) and the insulting charge for white paint I just ordered a May '07 build GT3 today.

B4 Carrara White
P74 Bi-Xenon Headlamp Package
640 Sport Chrono Package
P16 PCM
490 Sound Package Plus
XXZ Foot Rest Aluminum
375 Standard Seats to be replaced with Euro Carbon seats if I can get them
XSX Seat Belts - Guards Red
XFG Instrument Dials in Guards Red
EZA Interior Package Carbon
446 Wheel Caps with Colored Crest
460 Leather Sport Steering Wheel
900 European Delivery
Picking it up with my 9 year old - priceless!

BTW - this will be a US car. The Euro delivery charge includes 2 weeks of car insurance.

I'd skip the Euro Delivery and get Full Leather - as Euro Delv should be free.

Congrats! Make sure you'll break her in before you head in to the Nurburgring!

wow, I love your configuration.

One question: why the XXZ option? Why does it appeal to you? I just dont understand that option

BTW: The stock gt3 steering wheel is awesome, did you try one out before going to the 460?

Thanks,
Greg

XXZ make the dead pedal look like alum, similar to the other three pedals.
HOWEVER, XXZ only appears alum. it really is plastic, at least on wet sump'd 997's

from what i understand 460 and xpa are same (leather) but xpa is fatter rimmed. make sure 460 is what you really want.

Frank - have you got a picture of the red instrument background ? The dealer suggested this when I ordered mine last week, but I declined as I'd never seen what it looked like other than on the configurator....

Frank, I think you will be much happier with Porsche's narrow body GT3 not just from the cost standpoint. After all, it is their faster version. Although the RS may weigh a very minor 44 lbs less (in Euro form), it also has 5% worse aerodynamics. The regular 997 GT3 ran a 7:39 at the Nurburgring while the RS trailed with a 7:42. Keep in mind that a wider car needs more room to get through the corners. In case of the Nurburgring, any improvements in the chassis are more than negated by a wider driving line and worse aerodynamics. Congrats.

FYI, they won't allow you to have the Euro race seats from the factory. You can order them through your parts department. Removing the regular sport or adaptive-sport seats eliminates the side airbags which would violate the crash testing performed in the US. Hence why they aren't an option and why although they are standard on the Euro RS, the US version gets regular sport seats.

Good choice! The RS looks fat and flashy while the standard GT3 is slim and stealth - and is much better value.

I ordered the car because I wanted an occastional track toy that also provides me with fun driving to the track and is a good complement to my turbo. I ordered the standard leather (non alcantara) steering wheel as I figured it would wear better. I like the footrest because it matches the pedals. I can't find the picture of the red instrument background - my primary reason (like the red seatbelts) is to provide some contrast for the black and white.

In my own car I never drive faster that 7/10s - 8/10s on the track and still have fun (couldn't affort to crash the car) so a couple of seconds in speed don't make a big difference to me. I really like the aggressive look of the GT3 RS, however I can't deal with the orange accent colors and would have preferred white. The $4k paint premium did it for me and I simply couldn't make the numbers work. I also figured that the value premium of the RS would be destroyed if Porsche came out with a sunroof delete option on the GT3 for '08 or continued making the RS in the next model year - and I didn't want to take that risk.

I am in touch with a dealer in Stuttgart to order me the RS lid and wing, rear roll cage and potentially also the CGT seats. The car will still be a lot cheaper than an RS even though I spec'ed it with a lot of stuff I would have not selected in the RS for weight reasons.

My plan will be to keep the car in Europe for the summer and hit some track events with it. In addition, I'd like for it to legally stretch its legs a bit and make a little tour into the Alps with my son. As you can see Euro delivery was a big factor to me and it will be a priceless experience. Shipping my turbo to Europe in a 20" container for the summer would have cost me almost $10,000 plus insurance. BTW - thanks for all the PMs about buying the turbo but it's not for sale.

I don't want to be seen criticizing the RS, however I just couldn't make the ($$) numbers work.

And just what do you think will happen to the value of an 07 GT3 if the 08 has no sunroof?

Not likely to happen, but if it does, you'll take an even bigger hit on the 07 GT3.

It is more likely that thay will build more RS cars than add the sunroof delete option on the GT3, that boat has already sailed.

I think I'd go back to the RS, using your logic.

New cars will always depreciate. The sunroof is purely an emotional issue on the GT3 because people want a choice and don't have one. I actually like the sunroof because in comparison to my 965 there is a lot more headroom in the 997 and I won't have a problem with the helmet. Other people will find that out as well.

BTW - Further chasing after an RS was not an option for me. I was #3 out of 2 confirmed cars.
