The stock 996 GT3 ran 7:49 in AutoBild on street tires. The times shown for the 997 GT3 are meaningless because they were obtained with Michelin Sport Cups.

For the few of us that had done track time with MPS2, MPSC, Hoosiers, Dunlop SSR, Kumho V710, Toyo RA1, Michelin Slicks, etc, we know what's the time difference between MPS2 and MPSC.

The 996 GT3 RS ran 7:43 on Pirelli Corsa R-Comp tires. I never ran the Corsa tires, but from drivers that ran it and ran the MPSC, their opinion is that the MPSC is faster.

The truthful information will come from American magazines when they get to test the 997 GT3 US version (heavier) on street tires, because PCNA won't sell the car with MPSC on these venues.

As I mentioned before, the 997 GT3 will be 0.3-0.4 secs faster than the 996 GT3 assuming same street tires, skilled drivers, same track, and same weather, on a 60 secs course. The acceleration times shown by Sport Auto are the same obtained with the 996 GT3. There is more power in the 997 GT3, there is also more weight, there is more unsprung weight, and the car is long geared again.

The 997 GT3 is no contest for a 996 GT2. Look at this video, the car up front (black) is a GT2, the camera car is a 996 GT3, the white car is an Euro 997 GT3 CS. Pay attention after turn 7 where they can go flat out from about 80mph to 150mph, and look at the gap between the GT2 and both GT3s.

I am going to test drive a Sportec GT2 650 HP on Monday. Does anyone know if the Sportec GT2 is less reliable than a standard car? Sportec claim it is reliable. This is a 2002 model with 8,500 kms and no accidents.

0-200 km/h in 10 seconds and V-Max of 360 kph makes the Sportec GT2 very appealing to me, if the car is reliable.

I hope to test drive a 997 GT3 later the same day. Cost of both cars is about the same. Which would you choose if you had a good warranty with the Sportech GT2?

I might agree that a 997 GT3 is no contest to a 996 GT2 but judging something from this kind of video is next to pointless IMO.

I've passed many 996 Turbos & 996 GT3s (even in a horsepower track such as Sebring) in my 993, I don't think my car is faster than 996 TT or 996 GT3 though.

Look at the 997 GT3 driver in the video, his driving is pretty bad. If all the driver's were pros, then this kind of comparison would mean something.

This is my experience b/t the 996 and 997 chassis (non gt3). If the difference in feel b/t the 996 and 997 GT3 chassis is anything like the difference among the carreras, the 997 GT3 will be a more compelling car.

The GT2 is a beast, but I tend to be more interested in chassis dynamics and subtleties of a well engineered, predictable, accurate sports car. The feel of the 997 cars is astonishing; I'd opt for the 997 GT3 w/o equivocation. At this level of car, for mixed street and track use for entertainment, I don't give a crap which car is faster around the ring in the hands of walter or sport auto for that matter. What matters is the driving experience of the two cars.

I was having this conversation with a friend who sold his GT2 for awaiting his allocation for the 997GT3. For the same money they are both in the budget's sweet spot.

It's a tough call but the power of the GT2 is pretty damn extreme and seductive. Having said that I think I'd still lean for a GT3 (996 or 997).

The 996 cars suffer from poor suspension geometry resulting in attendant bumpsteer and nervousness. It gets old on the street although managable on the track.

The 997 chassis fixed that. For that reason alone, gotta go with a 997 car. Or do an RS suspension on the 996 chassis.

I'm not sure how much a 996 GT2/3 would 'suffer' but I'd be willing to yield to frustration.

I drove an 04 996 GT2 and a 996 GT3 RS back-to-back today. They are both truly great cars. If I had to choose just one of these, it would be the GT2 for its enourmous thrust combined with everyday usability. No other car with a 7.40 Ring time achieved this balance as well as the 04 GT2.

But I am still waiting to test drive a 997 GT3, which from most reports sounds like the best all round track and everyday car of 2006.

We had planned on doing ED on an orange 997 GT3 wth black interior.

And then the sunroof fiasco happened.

I now have a SY 996 GT2.

Default This HP Race Never Ends

Now, there's a new Turbo S about to become available, with the 3.8 litre engine, direct injection, and variable vane turbos. 530 HP is not too shabby for the top of the line sports car (same as the 2008 GT2) !

BUT, my point: a new GT2 with, I'm guessing, around 600 HP is soon to be offered. Maybe we should all wait ... OR, maybe that's just too much to handle.
