I don't know about that. The 2006 Gallardo is pretty good. I found this on autoexpress.co.uk . Both cars had the same lap times: 1:37.

The Road & Track shootout article in Sept showed the Gallardo faster around the track than the 997TT (1:17.8 vs 1:20). In fact, it bested the 911 in most measured categories: link

Still, the original question was the 997 GT-3 vs Gallardo. For track, the GT3 will probably be better, or at least more fun.

G reliability is known to be very good, virtually no issues. makes you wonder why 2 yr warranty.

i almost bought one:

4wd great in malibu, but car is heavier than gt3
04 egears can be unpdated to 06 and run well
service in LA is marginal, need to go to OC
looks are ??? nice in black but that means dirty black for me.
no real storage space and luggage room, really a daily commuter only

Also, keep in mind the 2006+ Gallardo has better gearing, more HP, and revised suspension.

Ray G 10-20-2006 03:38 PM

I only meant that the comparo from track-challenge.com was from 2003 apparently.

I think the performance increase of the 06+ Gallardo is greater than the performance increase of the 997 GT3. The new GT3 is probably only slightly faster around a track than the 996 GT3 RS. It's in the same ballpark. The 2006+ G is quite a bit better than the 2005 G.

Who cares about the track... G is the exotic of the two

Both the 997 GT3 and 997 GT3 RS have the same gears and R&P. Let's see how the 997 GT3/GT3 RS compare to the 996 GT3/GT3 RS.

996 GT3 / 996 GT3 RS: Ring & Pinion Gear: 3.44:1

Gear Ratio---Gear --- RPM drop on upshift --- Max Speed at 8,200 rpm (8,000 in 5th and 6th)

997 GT3 / 997 GT3 RS: Ring & Pinion Gear: 3.44:1
===================================================
Gear Ratio---Gear --- RPM drop on upshift --- Max Speed at 8,400 rpm (8,000 in 5th and 6th)

many thanks NJ. what does this mean practically? will the 997's feel noticeably lower geared in daily use? my main complaint on the 996 gt3 was gears too tall for canyon slamming.

NJ-GT 11-01-2006 03:40 PM

watt,

It means that you'll feel the 997 GT3 and RS long geared as well. If you want a car with good gearing, the F360CS and F430 are great examples, and the Z06 a good example until 4th gear, because 5th and 6th are way off on both the C5 and C6.

On the 997 GT3, other than the 350 rpm improvement between 1st and 2nd gear (slightly noticeable), all the other gears are closer by just 100 rpm to 250 rpm. That's hardly noticeable.

Let's say your canyon enthusiast driving ranges from 55 mph to 140 mph. In the old car you were driving in 2nd, 3rd and 4th, in the new car you will be driving in 2nd, 3rd and 4th as well.

My car uses a 4.00:1 Ring and Pinion Gear, and stock gears. Under the same 55 mph to 140 mph canyon driving range, my shift points driving in 3rd, 4th and 5th are closer compared to the 997 GT3 by 250 rpm and 200 rpm. Compared to the 996 GT3 in the same speed range, my car is geared closer by 400 rpm and 450 rpm.

997 GT3 + RSR 4.00:1 R&P = Lots of fun

there are a lot of people posting about the Gallardo's performance, who have NEVER driven one, or if they have they are not sufficiently skilled to get the potential out of the car.

Sorry, the Gallardo is faster from A to B than the 997 GT3 and the 997 Turbo - no ifs ands or buts, that's FACT.

Being a Lamborghini, the Gallardo attracts a great many owners who couldn't, quite frankly, drive nails into butter.

On comparable tyres and in the hands of the same competent driver, I expect the Gallardo and GT3 RS to post comparable lap times, with the edge in favour of the Gallardo.

I've driven the new Gallardo, the 997 GT3, 997 GT3 Cup and 997 TT. Unfortunately not on comparable tyres. I have also driven Ruf's supercharged Cayman, its a blast too. Of all these cars the least pleasant to drive was the 997 TT - a big girl's blouse.

So what do you really think about the 997?

Seriously, how do think the 997 GT3 compares with the 996 GT3?

Ouch, I've got a G and I can drive nails into butter as long as the butter is at room temp.

Seriously, the G will pull the doors off of my GT3 in a straight line. It's so much faster. On like tires, the G isn't that much slower in a turn either.

Where the GT3 will kick the lambos ass is on more than one lap. I haven't tracked a G over an extended duration but due to the extra weight I have a very hard time believing the brakes would stay on it. In a GT3, just push a G hard in the braking zones and pretty soon you'll be by.

My comments are based on the current year Gallardo with the sorted suspension, different gear ratios and revised engine.

I have driven the new Gallardo, with modified brakes, for protracted periods on track, without problems. I have demonstrated to various Audi and Lamborghini engineers the problems with the stock brakes, I am a little surprised by the apparent lack of familiarity with the characteristics of good brake systems.

Most of the experienced testers here in Europe have found that the 2006 Gallardo can lap faster than the GT3, although it demands a little more from the driver at full chat.

So your butter has as many holes in it as Gruyere cheese! Great! Seriously though, I have noticed at Lamboghini driving events that the standard of driving is not as high as it is at Audi driving events. You and I both know that some of the guys driving Lambos are fairly basic, rich yes, but basic, driving skills ain't a high priority with most bottom feeders.

Recently, I picked up one of the 'Quality Assurance' Gallardos from Ingolstadt, it was brand new and I was surprised how well the stock brakes stood up, but I was testing on public roads, so I wasn't using the brakes to the nth degree.
